Should be a board book.
The book is a regular paper book. I think all the books for young toddlers should be made out for sturdy board. My 2 year old son is pass tearing books, but we have a second on the way so we will have to be careful (took 1 star for that).My son is really into Barney and he picks up a lot from the show and books, so I'm very happy with purchase. The books explain different hugs (love, proud, feel better, good night etc hugs).

Barney books are hard to find in good condition and this one came in excellent condition as a softcover. My 2 year old granddaughter loves it!

Barney Book of hugs
Book is very short, pictures are nice, but much too fragile for my 2 year old. He tore off the cover after we read it 3 times.My son loves the pictures
