Its more of a rubber consistency but its soft and the dogs don't seem to mind stepping on it. I ordered the large mat - its a good size for two food bowls and the water dispenser. After reading reviews about water concerns under the mat I decided to put a small towel down under the mat - this works perfectly.

I just received this and it is a little larger than expected and has a strong odor at first. It does seem like crumbs have been getting stuck in the mesh a little and isn’t the easiest to clean.

First time that I've felt necessary to review an Amazon product. Most are just average but if you have a messy dog, as far as eating & drinking goes, this is a must have. I have a 200 lb mastiff. After drinking water it's usually like a slip n slide on the kitchen floor. This mat absorbs very well, and catches food as well. Best part - when you want to clean it, take it outside & hose it off. Looks brand new. Saved our wood floor near the dog feeding area. Love it.

I bought 2 of the extra large mats and I love them! We have 3 large dogs and I was looking for something to save my wood floors in the kitchen! These mats are a great size and there is plenty of room for the food bowl as well as the large water dish. When they drink water, it tends to get everywhere, but now it is absorbed into the mat and because of the size, the water does not get on my floors like it used to. I am very pleased with my purchase!

My dog, Belle, is an elderly Maltese whose feet slide on hard floors, so it was difficult for her to stand at her bowls on the kitchen floor. This large mat has plenty of space for her food and water as well as lots of standing room for her. No more slipping! Am really happy with this mat.

I am very happy with this mat. My old shitzu back legs kept sliding forward and he kept falling into his food and water bowl. It was very sad to see this happening. The large mat is big enough for both dog bowls and dogs. Sam hasn’t fallen since we bought it. It is light and easy to fold up and take with us. We will take it in our RV while on vacation. I would totally recommend this mat
