Tick tock
This is a sequel to Disney's 2010 'Alice in Wonderland' movie. Tim Burton, who directed that, is just one of the producers this time around. Some familiarity with that film will help you get into this. But you've probably seen that if you're reading this, so it shouldn't be a problem. This is still very much in the style of the 2010 film. So anyone who didn't like that should steer clear. It's also not really an adaptation of the book 'Alice Through the looking glass'. Instead it's credited as 'based on characters created by Lewis Carroll.' The producers having adjudged that the nature of the narrative of said book wouldn't work as a film. But Alice does go through a looking glass at one point in the story. So literary purists might want to steer clear as well. The film begins a few years after the end of the first one, with Alice [Mia Wasikowska] having a grand time as Captain of her father's ship. But that's not something society of the time was kene on young ladies doing. So forces are conspiring against her. She's diverted from that by problems in Wonderland. Where something is wrong with the Hatter. And the only way to save him is a quest through Time. But Time itself [Sacha Baron Cohen] is not something you can easily beat...This looks absolutely gorgeous on screen, with superb costumes and art direction giving you gloriously colourful images. The plot is a time travel one so it does zip around and require you to pay attention and keep up. But it's not hard to do that. Mia Wasikowska is an excellent lead who really gives it her all and carries the film superbly. But then there's Johnny Depp.Six years ago people loved him dressing up and being eccentric. But time has moved on and now it gets the opposite reaction. Fortunately though the Hatter isn't the entire focus of the film, and is only on screen every so often, so he doesn't get in the way as much as he could, or get that annoying.Sacha Baron Cohen however, despite going silly voice with his performance, makes Time a three dimensional and very strong character, creating the occasional laugh out of his actions. As such a performance should be. So he's very good indeed. And also commands attention when on screen. There's a good cast of reliable character actors in supporting roles, with a short voiceover from Alan Rickman giving you one last chance to hear him on film. And the central metaphors, in addition the usual just be yourself, all go with the time concept. So are all rather well handled. Those are ultimately predictable, but it does make it a fun and engaging watch as it goes along.A decent bit of escapism, which is great to look at, and handles it's themes well. It's not a bad watch. There are no extra scenes in the credits, but there is some very nice animation early on during them. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, Greek, Italian.Subtitles: English, Danish, Finnish, Greek, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish. It begins with several trailers, which can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote. All of these turn up in the sneak peeks section of the disc anyhow. There are no extras whatsoever.
