Justice League Dark (2018-) Vol. 1: The Last Age of Magic

A mish-mash of characters with little rhyme or reason.
I really want to like this series. I do. At has a team-up of Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and Detective Chimp, with appearances by every other magical character in the DCU. On that premise, this should be a good series. But unfortunately, whether by editorial mandate or weird plot choices by Tynion, everyone on this team got thrown into a plot I don't believe is going to work out in the end. After the events of Justice league: No Justice, Wonder Woman has decided to form a team to deal with supernatural threats, including Zatanna, Swampy, Detective Chimp, and Manbat. Almost immediately, magic is being distorted by Eldritch beings from outside our dimension trying to break through and devour the world. So normal justice league stuff. After only three issues you have to read the Witching hour crossover to get caught up on what's going on, then come back for another three issues. Which is annoying.Anyway, the problem I have with this is that I really don't like what Tynion is doing with the characters. Zatanna and WW are both in bad moods all the time, and Zatanna can't even use her powers properly. Detective Chimp doesn't get to investigate anything and is the resident team snarker. Swamp Thing is nerfed because if he was allowed to be as powerful as Alan Moore let him be by the end there would be no story. Not to mention the plot is burning through all the other magical DC characters so fast I don't see how they're going to win in the end without it being massively contrived.I plan to give this one more volume and then I might be done.

Interesting beginning to the story, some hit or miss characters
I don't know the "magical section" of the DC universe well, but I enjoyed this story well enough. It was a bit convoluted and I am not sure that the "team" is very well designed. Constantine, who seems to be a particularly difficult character for people to write, had hit or miss moments, but Wonder Woman fit into this story better than I expected. Like most "group" stories in DC these days, the universe is on the verge of utter destruction (as one character noted, this seems to happen on a biweekly basis in the DC universe these days). Still and all, I was engaged here and enjoyed exploring characters that I am not well acquainted with. Perhaps a smaller number of guest appearances would have made the whole a little more accessible. I suppose they added Man-Bat for "comic relief." He isn't funny, just goofily awkward, horrible dialogue. Still, an intriguing start to the series.

Great cast of caracters
I like ww in this. Manbat is cool. Constantine introduces himself. Detective chimpnis a good everyman for some reason and zatana is there. The one complaint is Zatana and Constantine. They write the sme story for those two in every movie and book. Id like to see the two of them apart and not in the same story. Or write a progression of the relationship.

The New JLD is amazing
I am a Wonder Woman reader, and picked this up solely because it dovetailed with the then-current WW stories. Pleasantly surprised. Not only is the new JLD lineup strangely compelling (who knew Man Bat and Detective Chimp concealed such emotional depth), but their enemies are truly chilling. Even if the major stakes seem like typical contrived comic book plots (oh, no, the universe is in danger . . . again!), the microstakes for each character are portrayed so well that they make the story really matter. A great read, when combined with Witching Hour.

Frustrating
So, the whole story resolves around all magic users turning into magical time bombs, while eldritch abominations invade the Earth. Most of the parties involved are literally useless against it, and yet, we're obligated to see them face a threat of this level all by themeselves.Regardless, they will fail no matter what. From the whole team involved, only one is fully capable of facing this threat, but can only make sense if you read Witching Hour. The rest are just utterly incompetent into doing anything besides getting themselves killed in failed attempts at fighting the menace, or not even lifting a finger because they're suddenly too dumb to try to defend themselves. Certainly, it was very frustrating to read. Not really sure if I'll buy Vol. 2. Althought the last chapter made up of short stories about the effects of the new threat in the world are interesting, the main story might not be as amazing as the cover makes it look like.

Opportunity for Wonder Woman Tie-in
If this looks like the worst JL line-up ever - you are not far off. WW seems chosen for marketability, Man-Bat and Swamp Thing aren't really team players, Zatanna is in loser-mode and Detective Chimp spends a lot of time boozing. Guest stars and cameos mostly serve to remind the occult genre fan of better-books-past. The description is wrong - issue 7 is included in this collection. Events in " issue 4 " are referenced but it was part of the “The Witching Hour” tie-in so they collect it elsewhere. In a Justice League title they pretty much have to save the world all the time, which means this can *look* like an arcane horror book but the villains are all teeth, no bite. I wish this were 'Zatanna and the Agents of S.H.A.D.E' or 'Suicide Squad Supernatural' but...it isn't.

Great team, great characters, but average story!
I love the Justice League Dark around the main characters Zatanna and Constantine (as well as Swamp Thing as sort of attached member) with other B- and C-list-characters (like Deadman, Detective Chimp and others), but always thought Dr. Fate has too join. Also I totally appreciate to bring Wonder Woman in. She is the daughter of Zeus (since New52) or at least close to Greek Gods, so definitely a magic character. So I like the part of the story, focusing on her magic roots (which interrupts the story with the trade The Witching Hour). The problem is the story and the writer James Tynion IV. He‘s not a man of few words. In fact, I liked some of his work back then, but now I‘m so tired of all these too overdone epic story arcs and these wannabe-graphic-novel-style with just too much text.I also would appreciate more downsized stories, not always these epic all existence threatening, too long story arcs. What about some just 2 or 3 issues story arcs, just known heroes vs. known villain, but new story. Simple, straight, compelling.Tyrion IV has always too much text. But still I like the idea of the story and the team - so 3 stars (not just 2).

Swamp Ciccio
Bello. Swamp thing pare Ciccio gamer.

Engaging
Spoiler: Loved the fact that Diana is heading the team this time. Each character has a proper back story. The story makes sure each character is properly utilized. Would def recommend this one.
