MTI Industries surface mount CO detector
MTI Industries 65-541-WT 12-V Surface Mount Hard Wired Carbon Monoxide Alarm I have used these detectors on my 34' Silverton cabin cruiser since 2007. I have just replaced the first set based on manufacturer's recommendations. I have them wired directly into my battery circuits so they are always on. They seem to be quite dependable and it is recommendeded to replace them at least every 5 years (the new ones may be rated at three year replacement intervals, not sure but will check). They mount very easily and only need a two wire circuit. I have one mounted in the salon and one mounted in the forward cabin sleeping area. I had a defective muffler on my 5 kw Kohler generator. Both of them sounded off and alerted me to start looking for the problem. I saw bubbles in the water emerging from the base of the fiberglass muffler. I can only surmize that this was the source of the CO. I replaced the muffler and the problem went away. Later, e.g. I had times when the alarms would go off and I could not find a problem. I finally tracked it down to a bad 12 volt engine battery that was boiling off acid fumes. I replaced all 6, 12 volt main/engine supply batteries and there were no more problems. They are apparently very sensitive to hydrogen or sulphuric acid fumes too. I would not have a boat that was not equipped with CO detectors and these seem to fill the bill quite well. They are well made, easy to mount and connect, and are quite sensitive and reliable. As I recall, I paid $100 each for the first ones I bought at the now defunct Boater's World and installed. The set I purchased from Amazon were at a much more reasonable price and essentially the same item. I have been quite pleased with the detectors.

Purchased as replacement
This item was a direct replacement for one in our RV that was about 9 years old according to date-stamp on back. After some research we learned that these units, and the propane alarm, should be replaced after 5 years. The propane alarm had failed recently, so we decided to replace both units. All parts were included. Instructions were very good and crimp connections were used to connect the 12-volt DC power. Tests and works fine.

Must be replaced every 5 years
I had to replace my 5 year old detector when the built-in clock trigger the end of life beeper. There's no way to continue using it because the EOL sensor will sound continuously. This replacement was exactly like the old one so replacement was easy.

Watch out for the manufacture date!
All CO2 detectors degrade over time, and this one has a 60 month (5 year) expected lifespan. Which is why I was disappointed when I opened the one I purchased and discovered the manufacturer date was 15 months ago. Well over 1/5 of the expected usefulness of the product. I considered returning it, but it’s probably a roll of the dice as to whether the replacement will be any newer. Otherwise, it’s identical to the one it’s replacing, so hopefully it works well for the under 4 years I’ll get out of it.

MTI carbon monoxide alarms
I bought 2 MTI surface mounted, hard-wired, carbon monoxide alarms for my boat. The previous factory installed alarms of another make were the cause of false alarms, couldn't handle a voltage drop and were very fragile (they had to be taken apart for installation, removal or access to wiring). The MTI units couldn't have been easier to install or set up (there's nothing to do). They can handle a reasonable voltage drop. In short, they great value and I can't fault them.

Identical replacement
Identical to the one its replacing from 2004. The old one had quick disconnect which the new one does not. I just soldered the old quick disconnect to the new detector.

Didn't work... poor support
Replaced an existing unit (of a different brand) with this. The alarm would go off for no reason (my motor home was parked in my driveway and nothing on the RV had been turned on for days). I contacted the manufacturer, but they were not particularly helpful. They wanted to know what brand my previous CO2 detector was. I didn't know offhand. I sent them the information in email and never got a response.Unfortunately, I delayed and didn't return this item to Amazon on time so I'll have to pay to return it. One of the disadvantages of buying from Amazon.
