This will be shades of grey as it is crushed granite and/or quartz. Crushed oyster shells will be white in appearance. Crushed oyster shell is good for grit and for providing a calcium supplement. However, you don't need to give baby chicks calcium until just before they start laying - somewhere around 6 months. I recommend giving both oyster shell and rock grit to layers.

Q: Does grit normally have calcium in it?

No it does not period. This grit product is made of crushed granite. It is not soluble and it passes whole through the entire digestive system. Oyster shell products is soluble and is a great source of calcium.

Q: What is the size of this layer grit vs the chick grit (in mm)?

This is a larger grit. Much to big for a silkie my larger hens are not as keen on it. Pretty big pieces

Q: Does this have probiotics?

No, and if I want to give probiotics, I'd choose the one I thought best, store it well, and give it in food or on/in a healthy treat.
