George Washington Wilson: Artist and Photographer

Definitive Work on Wilson
Excellent work by Roger Taylor. As a collector, it was interesting to read about Wilson's life and to see so much more of his work, but I think many other people would enjoy the book as the pictures are stunning and it's fun for readers to look at the stereoviews. As well as the central text, which includes much on his business, royal photography, Scottish views etc, there are four useful appendices including an 1863 list of his stereoscopic views. Very well printed and put together back. Happy with purchase and here's hoping there will be more books in this series - I would love to see a volume devoted to Antoine Claudet!

A great read!
I found this a fascinating read and thoroughly enjoyed viewing the 3D images with the enclosed Lite Owl viewer. It is great to see George Washington Wilson’s images and Roger Taylor’s scholarship get the showcase they so richly deserve.

Great update to classic book
This is the bible on Scottish photographer GW Wilson - the new edition by London Stereo Co has many more high quality images than the old out-of-print edition - a super book.

Disappointing: nothing like as good as A Village Lost in Time
I loved A Village Lost in Time and sought more Victorian stereoscopic imagery but this book didn't deliver in that respect. There aren't that many such photos and most of them are without people or any other cues to the era. The rather dry text is lifted directly from an academic account of Washington Wilson's life and it shows. A good edit would've improved the tome considerably. And what a tome: expensive to buy - and return!

Scotland's Greatest Photographer
Scotland has a unique place in early photographic history, and George Washington Wilson was one of the first Scottish practitioners, inventing the art and business of photography as he went along. This is an updated version of Mr. Taylor's 1981 book, and this new and improved version is well worth the wait. As with all of the books published by the London Stereoscopic Company, it is a magnificent book. While it is better to have original photographs in one's hand, the photos reproduced in this book are a close second.
