Easy to tell apart Salt & Pepper with these mills: light = salt
Ordered this along with the dark stained Zassenhaus 7.1" pepper mill to replace an older plastic combo salt/pepper mill that disintegrated into a meal.I really love that the mills have different stains making it easy to "Pass the salt". Most matching sets only have a S or P marking on them. The real wood mill has a very smooth finish that is very pleasant to handle. The color is exactly as shown in the photo. Kids love using it too as it isn't too large and 'feels good'.The grinding mechanism looks like plastic but is a very hard ceramic that should last. The only plastic I found is at the top inside where a spoked ring holds the metal bar in place and a small ring inside the cap where the metal rod comes through. I think this may be to protect the soft wood. This mill has a classic filling mechanism (you fill into the top after unscrewing the cap and try not to spill) but is fully adjustable from the underside where a marked dial makes it easy to adjust the grind. Update 1/2015: this is not a precision grinder, the adjustments work but the grind will not be completely even if you use rock salts. Still works just like the first day.Produces a good amount of salt with every turn, making it useful for cooking too. One caveat: If you use a very wet gray sea salt, it won't produce as much with each turn just because it clings. For any other salt the mill works fine.If you are looking for a quality traditional style mill, I can highly recommend this one. And yes, it is made in Germany.

Good Grinder but fast.
Nice grinder and it does work well but it works quickly too. So far I've used it with the pink Himalayan salt and as I like the grind on the fine side there is salt residue that cakes up on the bottom of the grinder, It's worth giving the grinder a tap or two before putting back down. For the salt restrictive folks it's not going to take much of a turn to get a fair quantity of salt out. I've had it for a while and so far corrosion hasn't been a problem.

Works Great
It's better than a salt grinder, it's a German salt grinder

Wonderful table accessory when using appropriate salt
We have used a beautiful pepper grinder for years and wanted to add a salt mill to our table. Among other things, it adds a little fun to dinner and dresses up the table. Obviously table salt and kosher salt won't work in this, as they will fall straight through the milling mechanism and leave a small pile of salt on the table. The answer to this is rock salt, which I purchased separately and review elsewhere. The bottom line is that if you are using the correct size and texture of salt, this salt mill is a joy to use. You can set the grind from super fine to extra coarse, the milling mechanism is effortless, and the overall build quality of this mill is such that it will be around for years to come (probably long after my kids are out of the house). Very happy with this purchase!

A Fine Salt Mill
Finally a salt mill that actually mills salt. Out of all the salt mill reviews I could find and read, very few mention anything at all about how they actually mill the salt. I'm running coarse Himalayan sea salt through this puppy and though it sometimes requires a shake or two to get the large pieces to feed down into the ceramic grind mechanism, it does easily grind them up. We'll see how it stands the test of time, though.

completely frozen
I use this at a summer home at Cape Cod. I bought an expensive salt mill with a ceramic mechanism hoping that the salt would not corrode it. The grind mechanism seems fine, but the top will not budge off the shaft. There is a metal to metal contact point which I suspect is frozen with salt.

Get rid of your other ones.
Just like its sibling, the pepper grinder, this salt grinder is a smooth operator. It looks very classy standing next to the pepper grinder.

Grinds sea salt super smoothly. Has ceramic grinding mechanism so hopefully it ...
Definitely worth the money. Grinds sea salt super smoothly. Has ceramic grinding mechanism so hopefully it will last way longer than my cheap grinder that had plastic mechanism and had no teeth left on it after about 5 years. This one is supposed to have 25 year guarantee so we'll see. Being made in Germany and not China is a plus too!

Good engineering, good results
On first impression this is an excellent product. I was lucky enough to get a Zassenhaus pepper grinder at a heroically low price via Amazon Warehouse, and the same outlet had this salt grinder for around ten British pounds, which is not a bad deal. Using coarse sea salt and the dial set to mid point the result was a good, strong grinding operation (if you'll pardon the expression) that really bit into the crystals; and output of consistent size. I suspect that the performance ultimately depends on the quality and coarseness of the (sea) salt you put into it. The only minor niggle is that the beech finish looks a little like MDF ... but you cannot fault the rest of it.

Top product
Very well made, not cheap but you get what you pay for, other mills give up the ghost after a few months,, this one is made to last, I think a salt mill is a difficult thing to make well, but this company managed it, The wood is also well finished and attractive

schlechte Verpackung!!!
Die Mühle hat sich während dem Transport in Einzelteile zerlegt, das Salz war im Paket verstreut. Der Artikel selbst ist in Ordnung und gefällt uns.
