Pray you don't meet Marilyn when she's hungry
A woman severely injured in a motorbike accident is given a new procedure to save her life, whilst doing so it makes her become blood hungry and anyone she attacks also becomes a blood hungry killer.Slick David Cronenberg 1977 horror thriller. The film begins quite slow with the accident and subsequent hospital sequences, which does take up a large part of the opening of the film, after this though when Rose goes on what can only be described as s "hunger" spree the film's pace picks up with the tension and suspense mounting up. The scenes of the gathering (not sure what to call them) mutants are excellently filmed and actually very tense and exciting, the last third of the picture contains arguably some of Cronenberg's best work, he does a sterling job in the chair building to crescendo that doesn't disappoint. Adult Film star Marilyn Chambers is excellent in the lead role, conveying exactly what she needed to, how she didn't do more "mainstream" work is a real shame, all of the cast do a fine job, Howard Ryshpan as the doctor has a couple of very good scare scenes. The effects are good and for such a low budget much better than you might think and the soundtrack is OK but the same piece of music plays over & over throughout the film and is a little annoying but never detracts from the film. One of two David Cronenberg films on the Section 3 nasty list (the other being Scanners) and it is far better than that grimy tag might lead you to believe. Whilst probably not a film for all tastes, it's nowhere near as gory as the earlier Shivers but it certainly has its moments, a key 70's horror classic.

"I'AM STILL ROSE"......"NO YOUR'E NOT"!
DVD/BLU-RAY STEEL BOOK FORMATI was a bit weary of buying this version from Arrow, after the mess that was their first Cronemberg release of Shivers Steelbook [Dual Format DVD & Blu-ray ]On viewing the Blu-ray/DVD I noticed there was some film dirt at the begining of the film and thought oh no another transfer from an inferiorDVD release a few yrs back. Rabid [1977] [DVD ]Interior artwork is boring could have used a better image than the one presented here.Has nice retro image on case reminds me of the old Alpha Video, cover from the early 80sThe sound is presented in mono 1.0Blu-ray: 1080PExtras:1999 interview with David Cronenberg, archive interview with the late Marilyn Chambers, ( booklet format) to name but a few of the extrasThe film is about a young couple who are out riding on a motorbike when there is a collision with a camper van Rose, (Marilyn Chambers) is badly injured. The crash has been witnessed by patients of a private plastic surgery hospital. An ambulance is quickly dispatched to the scene.Surgeons decide to use a revolutionary type of skin graphs to treat Rose.Rose, responds well but all is not as it seems. This was Cronenberg's second film after SHIVERS, and you can see where he expanded his interest in implants/virusesRabid, is a good film the only reason I have given this a 3 stars I feel the Blu-ray/DVD format could have been so much better I feel the print could have been given a bit of a clean but some people like to have dirt/grain when viewing films.

Great film and transfer, let down by poor extras.
I've been waiting for this film to be available on Blu-ray for ages ever since I heard good things about it a couple of years ago. The film is a really good body shocking horror. Marilyn Chambers is hot.It is a very good transfer very clear without losing some of the atmosphere. The extras aren't great. the documentary titled Rabid, Raw and Uncut was about the production company? I don't care about the production company, I want to know about the film. The big booklet as well seems to focus a lot on the making of David Cronenberg's first film for some reason. The booklet has a very good archive interview with Marilyn Chambers which is interesting, she comes off as a great personality. Film and transfer - five stars Extras - two stars.

FIRST TIME ON BLU RAY.
After a motorcycle crash, Rose, played by Marilyn Chambers, riding pillion, is taken to a nearby clinic, which is doing research in plastic surgery. After an operation for a skin graft, she develops a thirst for blood. Blood being her only food. One by one, she feeds off her victims who in turn develops rabies, and goes on to infect others, resulting in a widespread epidemic. There have been some negative reviews about other versions of this film. This is a brand new transfer, and is presented on blu ray for the first time. The colour grading has been redone, and the review on bluray.com criticizes the colours in some scenes. I did not find any major problems with any of the colours in any scenes. There is some grain evident in the transfer particularly at the beginning, but I suspect that this is how it looked when originally released to cinemas, so no problem. Arrow have provided a reversible sleeve, which has the artwork for the original poster. (Which is better than the new commissioned artwork). This version also comes with a dvd copy.Picture Quality is good, with natural flesh tones, from a clean print. The original aspect ratio of this film is 1.85:1. This blu ray transfer is in 1.78:1, which is the equivalent to a 16x9 tv screen, and an almost identical ratio to 1.85:1 so there is almost no picture loss, if any. The sound is in the original mono. This is the best this film is ever going to look, so if you are a fan of David Cronenburg, or just want this film, buy this version.FOOTNOTE: This review is for Arrow's blu ray release, not prism's dvd release, as Amazon has put it under.

One of the very first Rage Zombie movies(2016 scream factory bluray release review)
This early David Cronenberg film from 1977 stars the late Marilyn Chambers has a young woman who after a motorcycle accident receives some new radical treatment. Has she recovers, she becomes the carrier of a new strain of rabies. That affects humans only. This film has a few delightful wonderfully erie scenes.28 days later is often sited has the film to reinvent the zombie genre. But all 28 days later really did was to introduce the term infected into the zombie lore. Rage zombies started with George Romero's 1974 film The Crazies, then came Rabid.Special features include(2004 DVD) directors commentary, interview with David Cronenberg, trailers, photo galleries, bios & rare production stills.I rated the dvd 4/5. In Memory of Marilyn Chambers, Star of "Rabid"
I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Marilyn Chambers. I will always remember her excellent performance in David Cronenberg's science fiction horror classic "Rabid." If only she had starred in more horror films of the same caliber. Marilyn would've made an excellent scream queen. She reminds me of Jamie Lee Curtis. Both young women had that wholesome, pure girl-next-door look. The type of girl you'd love to ask to your senior prom or take on a motorcycle ride through the countryside. Rose (Marilyn Chambers) is badly burned in a motorcycle accident. She is rushed to the nearby Keloid Institute where she undergoes experimental skin grafts. Unfortunately, as in many of Cronenberg's films ("Shivers," "The Brood," "Scanners," and "The Fly"), the treatment has dangerous side effects; Rose experiences a mutation. In her armpit, she develops a needle-like protuberance. She awakens from a coma with an insatiable thirst for blood and commences seducing and attacking men around her, inflicting them with a Rabies-like virus. The incubation period is short and soon these men become crazed lunatics, foaming at the mouth and biting anyone near them. The virus spreads like wild fire and all of Montreal is in danger of becoming rabid. "Rabid" has a very suspenseful, terrifying plot. It belongs in the same genre as the end-of-the-world films where a mutating virus threatens to destroy all of mankind as in the classic "Omega Man" and the modern "27 Days Later." It does not have the look and feel of a low budget film. There is a lot of violence, the type you would find in a zombie film such as "Dawn of the Dead." There is mass hysteria on the subways and at the malls as people are attacked and bitten. Soldiers shoot those who have been infected. At the end, soldiers in white decontamination suits are seen gathering up the dead. Like many of the horror films in the seventies, "Rabid" does not have a happy, cheerful ending. It is rather bleak and disturbing. I must praise Somerville House for releasing an excellent DVD package of "Rabid." It is presented in a crisp, clear widescreen format with excellent audio. There is an interesting, informative interview with Cronenberg who explains how he came to cast Marilyn Chambers despite critics complaining that his first film, "Shivers," was pornographic. Her filmography is also provided on the DVD. Despite all of her other films, I will always remember Marilyn as the star of "Rabid."

David Cronenberg At the Start of His Mastery of Body Horror
Though David Cronenberg already had a minor hit horror feature under his belt with SHIVERS (aka THEY CAME FROM WITHIN), RABID is the first "true Cronenberg movie" for me (i.e., the first that didn't look like a student film). The story of beautiful young Rose (Seventies porn icon Marilyn Chambers), having gotten disfigured in a motorcycle accident and used as a guinea pig in an experimental form of reconstructive surgery which leaves her with a penile "stinger" under her armpit which drains blood from another's body, and unbeknownst to her the stinger also injects her victims with a fast-acting, virulent strain of rabies. She escapes from the clinic that operated on her (leaving a trail of infected or dead people in her wake - the powerful cover image is of the woman she assaulted in the clinic's jacuzzi, who she stuck in a walk-in freezer after drowning) and makes it to her home town of Montreal, as the authorities attempt to track down the source of the "super-rabies" so they can contain the plague Rose is unwittingly causing....Despite a tight budget (a half-million dollars Canadian, or about double what your average Roger Corman cheapie cost back then), Cronenberg succeeds in adroitly staging an apocalyptic epidemic in Quebec province. He's aided immensely by Chambers, who turns in a much stronger performance than you might expect as a Nice Pretty Girl (the kind you want to ask out, or take care of if she's in trouble) turned reluctant predator - while she's not in the league of Sissy Spacek (the director's first choice for the role, turned down by the producers because Chambers was better-known at the time!), she still does a good job with the part. This DVD, digitally remastered and released by Canadian distributor Somerville House, comes with a Commentary track by Cronenberg, as well as a half-hour interview (clearly part of a larger career retrospective, but still worth watching). Would that Cronenberg's other, better known horror movies THE BROOD and SCANNERS had this much attention paid to them!
