Exposing the horrific details of domestic violence that her sisters had to endure is not an easy task, especially in a society l
A brave account of a woman whose family had to endure a lot due to the patriarchal norms of a society. Kudos to her mother for enduring the hardships and trying her utmost to protect her six daughters after her husband passed away. Witnessing the ordeals of her family made Nighat a stronger person. She has written this account to serve as a reminder that gender inequality is a grave injustice. However, education can serve as an equalizer in breaking the taboos, myths and giving women a respectable status in society, one that every woman deserves. Nighat's memoir is a heartfelt account and is filled with details of her life in Burma, Pakistan and America. Exposing the horrific details of domestic violence that her sisters had to endure is not an easy task, especially in a society like Pakistan where such issues are shoved under the rug and it's not easy to confront them heads on. Thus, Nighat deserves a lot of credit for writing this much needed memoir and exposing the hypocrisy, double standards and brutality that some women are subjected to under the garb of culture and religious pretense, whereas these are mostly issues of human rights violations that are shunned and condemned by all.

Golden Bangels Hidden Tears 5 Stars
This book was a true story told by an author who lived her life as she told her story, it was very hard to read at times because of the heartship she suffered, and how she did everything possible to help her Family and live her life as she wanted in a time when Women were treated terrible, and considered second class citizens. She had many sisters and spent her time trying to protect them and tried to live her life as she wanted. She eventually came to America thru an arranged marriage and found love and happiness. This book should be read by Women so they can see how hard it was and is for a women to live in Pakistan. As hard as it was to read at times. I was very glad I got to read this book and learn more about another culture.

Congrats Nighat for writing such a good autobiography!
This is well written and a through details of the life of women in that part of the world. If we read between lines, it also gives you the hope that women can be empowered through education. That the parents needs awareness not to deprive the girls of education.Things seem hopeless for women unless the laws of land change in women's' favor.women have no self respect due to the cultural taboos. Congrats Nighat for writing such a good autobiography!!

A story of triumph in an oppressive society!
Excellent autobiography about a woman's struggle in a male dominated society. Gives you glimpse of what women endure in a Middle Eastern society and how fortunate we are as American women to be educated and enjoy free will.
