I put mine in the waterfall and it helps control the string algae.

I love this product. But in the packing with other products...amazon somehow got a gasoline smell trapped with it. Luckily this hay is so good that setting it out to air, it completely dissapated. But Amazon either has to not pack toxic material with the product or start sealing it in with a second layer of the paper sack.But otherwise this is the best product I've seen so far. Love it.

I wanted to give them all stars because they appear to be what they're purported to be. If you know you need fine barley straw for your pond or trough don't hesitate. They're a little pricey but good value considering Amazon's quick shipping.But, they didn't work for my situation. Where most articles tout barley straw for combating algae, I found a couple that said it would help with organic matter making bubbles on our pond's surface, where there are a lot of Koi in a small pond that depends on its pumps for aeration. So we tried them, tied in the outflow from the pumps hoping they'd somehow soak up the excess stuff.They didn't have any apparent effect on the bubbles. And when they broke down after a couple weeks they left lots of little bits of barley straw that came out of the bags and clog the pumps.If you're sure you need barley straw these are the real thing. If you're wondering if they'll help remove organic matter, my experience is they won't.

My ~350 gallon pond was prone to string algae, especially in warm weather. Controlling it was a losing battle, and it came back over and over, usually within a couple days of treatment or removal. I ordered the barley bail, removed the algae once again, added AlgaeFix to the water, and put the bale near the waterfall. It is mid-summer and for 3 weeks and counting, the algae is GONE. I am so pleased! I think I found my perfect combo.

I researched a natural way to keep algae out of a pond and found this for our little rain barrel. Bleach products kill the plants and the birds like to drink out of it too so I wanted it safe. I sewed a little mesh bag and tied a little bundle of this, sunk it to the bottom of the barrel and the water stayed clean "all summer". I'm very impressed and so happy to have found it.

Works really good. My pond was covered in alge and you couldn't see bottom. I put 1 of these in and the next day I could see bottom. Works good but they saturate fairly quickly so you may need a couple or many depending on how you want to use them.

I think this product introduced spring algae to my fishpond, this thing had weeds or grass growing out from it.
