"The Old Curiosity Shop" by Charles Dickens
I have first read about this novel in another book, “Nirgendwo in Afrika” by Stefanie Zweig, where a headmaster nicknamed one of his little pupils “Little Nell”. That is actually why I started reading “The Old Curiosit Shop”!A true literary success; I very much enjoyed reading it! Reach in style, vocabulary and quotations; how many ancient songs and poems, operas from the English speaking countries have I learn from that novel!Card games addict, Nell’s grandfather lost all his fortune and more, throwing both of them on the roads; this, eventually, leads to her death. Dickens took many opportunities to depict the grandfather’s addiction and how people took advantage of him.The text is adorned with many nice drawings. This is one of the best novels written by Dickens I have ever read.

A really great novel!
A very moving novel in which Dickens narrates the misfortunes of a little girl called Nell and her grandfather, whom she has to sustain and guide as they wander around small villages and a big industrial city in Victorian England. His narration is very vivid and precise and full of sentiment. This novel is not just about Nell and her grandfather, though. There are other characters whose life is intermingled in the story and we also feel close to them and are interested in their fate because Dickens makes that possible. This novel is a mirror through which we can see and feel what it was like living in nineteenth-century England and the hell poor people had to go through during the Industrial Revolution. In this way, the novel is also a great cultural monument which pays tribute to Dickens's era. I had a great time reading it and I definitely recommend it to everybody.
