You get exactly what you pay for
I purchased these calipers for employee training in our machine shop knowing that an investment in a nicer set would be under appreciated. A comparable set of Mitutoyos would be at least 4x the cost, but at this price point my trainee could drop and ruin 4 sets and I'd still be in the black. Within a minute of opening the box, these Carreras definitely showed why they're less expensive... They had a few burrs that needed to be filed down, they had sticky spots in the slide, they had a few over-speed errors and showed some obvious, poorly machined surfaces. The most odd thing about them was the display. Usually you would see 4 digits to the right of the decimal point however these have the first digit in a large font and then the last 3 in a smaller font. As an experienced machinist, I kept doing double takes while viewing this odd formatting. I KNOW this will catch my trainees off guard.Pros:Affordable, come with a nice padded case, good enough for common +/- .005" measurements, "disposable".Cons:Sticky slide action, odd display, cheap feel and finish, inconsistent measurements at small tolerances. Now why did I give them 4 stars? Simply because they're exactly what I was looking for... an inexpensive set of "disposable" calipers where perfect accuracy or performance don't matter. If you're looking for these to be your go-to set, you'll most likely be disappointed. Out of the box these Carreras are less accurate than my 10+ yr old digital Mitutoyos.

Battery drains everytime, ruins an otherwise great product.
I like the caliper, but it has one HUGE problem: Everytime I take it out to use it, the batteries, that I just replaced are empty.I switch it off, after using, but it turns itself on. Some idiot that should not be called an engineer has designed this thing to turn automatically on when moved, but then not having an automatic off, which is really really dumb. It ruins an otherwise excellent product. Now this would not be so bad if the battery would be easily to replace, but you need a screwdriver for that, so from now on, after having wasted 4 batteries for measuring about 4 times, I will take the battery out and put it in when needed. I could probably also rig a permanent off button, but a product is not supposed to need this kind of intervention, that is now what I'm buying it, then I will build it myself. So why this scorching review? Well, to find a workaround (which is OK for me, if I can make it work it fine with a little trick), last time I switched it off, I arrested the slider, with the screw, so it can't move. Nope, same damn problem, battery empty. It might also be that it decharges the battery by itself, not even being on, but seriously: having to replace the battery every time I pick it up, even that being after 1 or 2 months is seriously not OK.

Carrera CP9808-TF Titanium 8 Inch Electronic Caliper
After deliberating on many choices for a digital caliper, I chose the Carrera CP9808 Titanium 8 inch model. I am very happy with the choice and it is performing very well. It is all metal and has a good "heft" to it, unlike the flimsy plastic versions. The caliper allows you to switch on/off, reset scale and convert between inches/fractions, inches/decimal and metric with just the push of a button. Very nice and accurate. It comes with a prefit formed padded case, manual, 2 batteries (uses only one at a time), and mini screw driver to place the battery. The manual does not even address the battery so you just have to use your own intuition as to how to install the battery.I am very pleased overall and is exactly what I had in mind for a metal, digital, electronic caliper. My favourite feature, scale conversions of the 3 modes mentioned above.Recommend 5 stars to anyone confused with all of the choices out there for an electronic caliper.

Impressive value
I've had this item for 2 years now. It has taken so many measurements and never failed me. When I bought it I thought I was getting an economy brand that I would replace as I gained more knowledge as a hobby machinist, I can't come up with any excuse to replace it yet. It reads down to .001 with excellent precision, the only caveat being that you must figure out the best way to hold it. The only criticism I can come up with is that the depth gauge is a little shaky but for $40 these calipers have surpassed my expectations. Will it compare to a $120 Mitutoyo? No, the Carrera has more slop in the slide but if you know how to use it, you can squeeze a lot of performance out of these economy calipers.

Good "basic" set of calipers, especially for woodworking, general maintenance
It's a good set of calipers for the money. I'm an engineer and have a $200 Mitutoyo gauge at work that I've used almost daily for 13 years. The Carerra product is reasonably well made, feels good, and functions well compared to the much more expensive Mitutoyo. The plastic is cheaper and not as durable feeling as the Mitutoyo and the action is a little looser, but I use the Carerra Precision mostly for woodworking so spot on calibration and precision aren't as critical. I've had the product for about 4 months and haven't had any issues. The English unit fractional measurement feature is nice but I haven't really used it.

Why did I blow all that money on a Starrett again?
This is a nice set up. It comes with 2 batteries and a little phillips screwdriver in a real nice case. It repaets measurement very well and even though it's an 8" model it is preatty light. All and all a good choice. The having fractions conversions is pretty handy as well. It is no less acurate then my Starrett dial caliper that grew legs and got replaced with this. I would recomend this to any one who needs to make qucik and acurate measurments.
