It's pretty good.
I was rather amazed that something like this even exist for the common person. Over all it's a good program for making simple rpg games and there are tons of content you can find online as well. "Scripting" in this program which is essentially coding to make your game do things outside it's basic programming is VERY complex and in the future I wish for scripting to be a bit simpler but other than that everything is good. It's easy to learn and looks nice, people who are looking to get into game design should at least check it out. And people who just like to create things for fun- like games should give it a shot also.

indie developer loves powerful game making engine!
I've been using/importing RPG Maker in its various incarnations (SNES, PSX, PS2, etc) and mainly made games as a hobby. When RPG Maker XP came out, I decided to get serious and make commercial games. After burning out computers, when VX ACE came onto the scene in a tangible format (cd!!), my game creation really took off! Just so you know - this program isn't just limited to RPG's! With its powerful scripting language, I've made interactive fiction games, fighters, isometric rpg's, platformers, and even a card game. VX Ace is easy to use, having combined the features of XP and VX. If you have the time, imagination and dedication, this powerful programming package is the best start on game creation!VX Ace is entirely customizable, from graphics, music, even scripts to make your game more unique instead of using the defaults. Even the battle system can be changed (this is where the scripting comes in!) RGSS3 is actually easy to learn once you wrap your head around Ruby's syntax (which RGSS3 is based). Though i have some background in coding in other languages (C, Java, Actionscript, Basic) Ruby was a bit difficult for me, but managable after I read that reference manual! The help file and reference manual is easy to read and understand. If you charge in head first without reading the manual (or never tinkered with RPG Maker's pervious incarnations on PC before) then there might be a difficult learning curve. If you had RPG Maker XP then switched to VX Ace it might throw you for a loop (VX and VX Ace are similar in apperance, but with some definate changes - such as VXA's internal character creator). I had no probelms setting up events, creating maps, importing images and music, even adding new items in the database. With this engine, I made a playable rpg that took 12 hrs to finish in 2 weeks. It works in Windows 7 Ultimate with no problems.

It is now put up on the shelf collecting dust as i feel like i only got half of what i should have ...
i expected to get more than i got out of the program. When i tried to find system images they are invisible hence i cannot seem to change their appearances as i hoped to do. It is now put up on the shelf collecting dust as i feel like i only got half of what i should have by reading the dialogue about the program. a friend of mine has a hacked version and seeing all he got with his isnt even half of what i got with my paid set.

Something I've been looking for for many years...
I really like Role-Playing video games, and I always was looking for the next best game to play because they were much different from other games. Most didn't rush you, plus they actually required more than simply running around and pressing 'attack' like most games are today, the 'attack' could be anything from firing a ranged weapon (First-Person Shooters) to swinging some weird weapon (Most Action-Type games). I always found myself writing up some simple RPG on paper when I had some free time, resulting in me burning around 3 hours on dice rolling and cooking up more ideas for the next enemy. Now, with RPG Maker VX Ace, I can finally create those silly, but interesting RPGs that I used to spend hours designing but ended up ditching because of how much writing (and paper) they required. The program itself works great. There aren't any problems that I can see. It is very easy to use, as almost everything is added by the means of simply clicking and typing. There isn't any real coding required, unless there is something you need added (Such as a certain feature) that isn't already included with Ace, but even then the website for RPG Maker has forums with a large amount of these Scripts already written by members of the forum that you can simply copy and paste, further simplifying the use of the program. Just remember to give the Script Creator credit if you use their Scripts in your game. All in all, this is a fantastic program that is ultra-easy to use. Even if you aren't going to publish a game made with Ace, it can still be a great way to get a game you enjoy playing; just create it yourself! It'll take some time, but it'll very likely be worth it.

Good product
As a long time RPG Maker user, this was a very good product. There are many people who criticized this engine, but that's because they are usually knit-picky about features they want to or "believe" should be default to the engine itself. The long and short of this is - RPG Maker, and all other game development engines are just that - they are engines. Not turn-key magic tools that make all your dreams come true at the push of a button.Just as with any engine, if you want to customize it, you have to get your hands dirty, thinking you can make a game by just spending money is not how game creation works. Likewise - anyone can make a video game from scratch but you shouldn't have to spend 10-20 years just to develop the base engine nor spend thousands of dollars like big game development companies just to have the simplest engines. This is what RPG Maker is - a base engine, it gets you started. After that you're free to create the game of your dreams and tell your story as long as you have the will to get your hands dirty and use the engine to it's fullest.
