A must
Incredible style, incredible writer, a real must! Eliza Fay has an amazing talent for describing things and her terrible journey from England to India. A great combination of wit and talent.

Very little about India despite the title
Eliza Fay was clearly a woman of fortitude. However, if you are expecting a book full of descriptions of India and her life there, you will be disappointed, as I was. There is actually very little about India at all. For the most part, it is about the many ships she travelled on, and their captains, and who she dined with. There were so many names, which, especially when partly redacted as these books tend to be, make it very hard to follow. The letters themselves didn't always make the best sense either, which may possibly be down to the original editor. If you're interested in 18th Century sailing, then great. If you're looking for an evocative memoir of 18th Century India, then perhaps pass.

Wonderful reading experience. Hers is an original voice joined with sharp observational skills. Recommended highly. These letters reveal the period as experienced day to day in a manner that general historical accounts do not. She has an understated sense of humor and manner of capturing the personalities of those she meets along the way. She bears up under hardships and hair raising adventures. Quite a lady.

My reflections on the "Original Letters from India"
I loved her personal impressions - I admired her "spunk", however the 18th century English was sometimes difficult to follow.
