Another classic movie
I had seen this movie a few years ago and thought it would be a great classic for memorial day. John Wayne of course is one of the key characters and it is a typical movie of the genre during and following World War II.

Two Classic WWII films and two extras.
Bataan and Back to Bataan are two classic WWII films made for the home front for morale purposes and they do a good job in the tradition of propaganda films. Destination Tokyo is a good submarine picture and again in the tradition of home front morale boosters, it made a point of the U.S. ability to strike back at Japan on its home ground. The Green Berets doesn't work because it was a Vietnam propaganda film that tried to cash in on a Hit Song. The crappy "Ballad of the Green Berets" became a #1 hit and about half the film relates to these special forces in Vietnam, the other half is just a regular war propaganda film. It does show the ridiculous reasons for war that people are willing to believe: Vietnam was only the start, the end would be total worldwide Communist domination. By the time the film was made most Americans knew the war was a quagmire and would never be resolved in victory for the U.S. Vietnam fell and we are STILL not communists.

MY FATHER IS IN THE MOVIE-WHAT DO YU EXPECT ME TO SAY??
I'M ALSO A JOHN WAYNE FAN- & HE DID A DOOD JOB IN THIS AS WELL. ITS WORTH BUYING! ITS AN EARLY WW 2 MOVIE, & IT SHOWS A LITTLE. THE WAR WASENT OVER WHEN THE MOVIE WAS MADE. TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE A TRUE STORY. YES MY FATHER WAS IN THE MOVIE-OR SHOULD I SAY AN ACTOR PLAYED HIM. HE'S BEEN DEAD SINCE 1980 & HE NEVER SAID A WORD ABOUT THIS MOVIE. I HAPPENED UPON IT ONE DAY ON TCM. ITS A PITY THAT SOMANY MEN & WOMEN SACARFICED SO MUCH TO GIVE US ALL A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE. NOW LOOK WHAT WEVE GOT!! A BAD DREAM!! & NO ITS NOT GOING TO GET ANY BETTER. THE CURRENT POLOTICAL CLASS SEEMS TO THINK (FROM BOTTOM TO TOP) THEY SHOULD BE TREATED AS ROYLTY!! THEY SERVED THIER COUNTRY FOR 20 YRS.!! WHAT A JOKE!! SERVED FOR HOW MUCH?? I DOUBU THERES A SINGLE ONE OF EM THAT WILL STAMD UP & DO THE CORRECT THING!! I FIND IT VERY SAD! DISGUSTING. DOUGLAS G. WAITE

Back to Bataan.
A heavily fictionalised flag-waver based on the Battle of Bataan following the exploits of Filipino guerrillas fighting the Japanese; the propaganda element is laid on with a heavy hand and is a bit too obvious for a modern audience โ it looks more like an entertaining action movie rather than an attempt at an accurate depiction of history. It should be of most interest for students looking to analyse wartime propaganda as it has many of the classic formulaic clichรฉs of the genre. The standard UK DVD release has no extras; English subtitles are available if required.

John Wayne at war
Joe Madden leads a squad of soldiers in the liberation of a Japanese prison camp and helps the local Philippian resistance. This is based on a true story and features real soldiers in the end credits alongside John Wayne. A young Anthony Quinn also stars as one of Madden's troops. A surprisingly touching and intelligent film that deals with the effect the war had on the Philippians not just Americans on the island. Good battle scenes and very good performances too from the whole cast.
