Couldn't get it to work.
Sorry can't rate this I think I made a mistake buying it because I then learned by this purchase that my wifi is too limited or not adequate for this device.

I would recommend.
Update: because it sticks out so much, it got caught and broke. I would not buy a long one again. I replaced with a small one.The item arrived very quick and in its own box, securely fit with instructions and a mini-sized CD disc. I didn't use the disc, I downloaded the device manager from the website. Then I attempted to install and set it up and couldn't. It didn't work on its own. It didn't plug and play. There was no Utility window to set it up. After hours of frustration, I IM/chatted with their support desk. It only took about 5 min to figure out that I had to "disable" my internal WiFi first (the one that had broken on me) before this one would work. That simple! The instructions don't mention anything about this step and It should since it's really important. The device works perfectly. I've had no issues since, no hang ups. I would recommend.

It works
Broke my laptops internal wifi device a long time ago and order this a long time ago. Probably outdated for a review since it seems my only complaint for this, was that it was a little long and the newer versions are much shorter. Worked great and provided reliable wifi through a usb port what else could you want?

Works for MacBookAir El Capitan, great customer service
StarTech has great customer service and tech support. I purchased this to replace the dead wifi card in a MacBookAir. It works with El Capitan, by downloading drivers (you'll need another computer with internet and a flash drive to transfer it, or an ethernet connection, if like me you're on a computer without a CD drive) from the StarTech website, and then it puts an icon in the top bar to take the place of the original Mac internal wifi. Easy, and now I have fast internet again. The tech support person easily helped me find the drivers and walked me through the setup and installation.

but I think it's the USB device which has gone bad over time
Was originally connecting at 850mbps, but now down to 650ish. This could be a number of reasons, but I think it's the USB device which has gone bad over time. That said, it's worth the purchase if you have an AC router. Getting a stable 150+mbps over the internet. Have not tested local networking speeds, which I imagine would be much higher.

Solved my problem...
I have a Lenovo Thnkserver tower and it is a great computer except the on board WiFi chip stopped working and no matter what I tried I could not get it working again. The only solution that I could figure was to get a good USB 3.0 dual band unit since this machine has six USB 3.0 ports and I happen to have a dual frequency router. This is pretty much as fast as I need it to be since my router also supports the latest 802:11AC protocall.

Works Fantasic!
Fantastic wireless adapter. Win 8.1 instantly installed Realtec drivers, but they weren't really for this particular model and I was getting 45 Mbps. I went to the Startech site and downloaded the drivers there and after install and a quick reset of the PC am easily getting 54.5 Mbps on a line that's only supposed to deliver 50Mbps. No hassles, excellent performance! StarTech makes reliable, reasonably priced hardware and this one is no exception.

Four Stars
A little bulky, but my daughter's laptop can connect to Wifi again! Much cheaper than a new laptop. Yay!

I tried to go to the customer support page of the startech website to ask them what that means and I didn't figure out yet how t
didn't do nothing special, my connection lines are still the same. I install the program it works but on the tray icon it shows an exclamation sigh that shows something isn't working properly despite the fact that it works. On tray icon it keeps saying no rtl818x which I don't know what that is. I tried to go to the customer support page of the startech website to ask them what that means and I didn't figure out yet how to send them a specific question so overall I wouldn't recommend this especially for the price. I think you can find something better with even less money.

upgrades an old machine
It let's my old laptop use higher-speed Wi-Fi. But every so often it stops, and restarts when I unplug and replug it.
