Solution for Solar/Inverter/Battery mini fridge start up issues
I bought a 300W inverter to run a fridge that draws ~70W when running. The fridge as it was originally made required over 800 Watts for several seconds to start up. So this and a 750 watt MSW inverter could not reliably start it. The thermal relay would flip and then inverter would go into overload shutdown. After extensive research I learned that I had what is called PTC – no run capacitor or start capacitor. The fridge relied on “unlimited” current from the wall socket to start the motor. The RCO210 is the smallest of the 3 replacement units that SUPCO makes. The others are RCO410, and RCO810.You remove all the external connections/PTRC/relay from the compressor and use the three colored wires on the unit to hook it back up. Then you use the 2 black power leads and twist them onto the power from the thermostat knob control. My fridge now starts easily off of battery power running through my 300 Go Power PSW inverter. I now have a viable camping solution for using a freezer/fridge on solar power.Considering how inexpensive this is, I do not understand why they do not make this start capacitor and relay standard on fridges. Given the choice of buying a $400 1000W inverter or getting this, it’s pretty simple to decide.

I didn't have to buy a new freezer!
It took me a month to get around to doing it, but I finally put this unit into my old Whirlpool upright freezer today. The problem was that the compressor wouldn't start. You could hear a click after a few seconds, but that was all.It worked! The compressor started right up and the freezer started cooling. I checked it a while later, and it had shut off, with the thermometer I had inside reading 0 degrees. While I was looking, it clicked and started again, just as it should do.Installation was easy enough, except for the cramped quarters I had to work with - but that's not the fault of the repair part. All that I needed for tools was a screwdriver and pair of needle-nosed pliers to remove the old parts, and a wire stripper to prepare two freezer wires for the new part.
