Very good laugh
This movie was i think one of the first if not the first mystery science theatre 3000 (or MST3K) efforts - and its one of the best, given that they are able to take the mickey out of a well loved sci fi film of the 50s, this island earth, which has so many of the 50s SF tropes:- mysterious inventions, square jawed hero, screaming heroine, interplanetary travel, monster for the heroine to scream at. Tbh we cannot view this film in any kind of pre critical way now that the team of mike, crow, et al have had a go at it. The basic - and lovably daft - premise of MST3K is that a msd scientist has trapped mike and robot friends on a satellite whehe he proceeds to force feed (or force view) them 50s USA (mainly) SF films as some kind of torture, which they, while watching, ridicule mercilessly to our delight and hilarity. Enjoy.

The silhouettes look great!
Movie: 5/5This is Mystery Science Theater: The Movie. It's well written, and despite being hacked apart in editing due to audience testing response as fans know, it's very funny.Video: 4/5The host segments look beautiful. You can see the strings on the robots very well and easily identify the materials use on set, and I love it. This Island Earth however, is clearly the same version they filmed against and not taken from the Blu Ray remaster of the movie which has been released outside the UK. It's grainy and a shame they didn't or couldn't get a better version re-cut for the movie, but it still looks better than the DVD version. The silhouettes look great though!Audio: 5/5Sounds great to me.Overall: 5/5Naturally, MSTies are going to buy this, and there's every reason to: it looks beautiful! But, as others have mentioned, the extras are lacking; there's a 5:16 "featurette" in standard definition (a brief behind the scenes / what is MST3k dealio), a 1:40 trailer and a stills gallery. That's it. Still, hopefully we'll get more and better now that it's coming back.

In the not too distant future
A cult US tv show that ran from 1988-1999 - but which didn't get much showing over here, and thus is only known to a few aficionados in Britain - Mystery Science Theatre sees a mad scientist intent on world domination. By showing people the worst film ever made, driving them crazy, and taking over in the resulting chaos. To find which film will do the trick, he has an ordinary guy prisoner on a satellite and forced to watch bad fillm after bad film. But said ordinary guy survives by 'riffing' [making fun of ] the bad movies, with the aide of several self built robots.Every episode would have comedy moments with the main character, the robots, and those running the experiment at the start, then three sketches in the middle, before more comedy at the end.The line up did change as the years went on, the ordinary guy originally being a guy called Joel, who was replaced mid way through the run of the whole thing by another guy called Mike.If you know the show, then you'll find this slots into the eighth season, as the line up here matches that. But all this exposition is crammed in quickly and clearly in the opening scene, just in case you never saw the show before. In this movie, which is, to all intents and purposes, just an episode on the movie screen, since it doesn't really tamper with the format, the fillm being watched is the 1955 science fiction film This Island Earth. A lot of episodes of the show did involve films that are more dated than terrible, although there were some with fabulous examples of the latter. But this is really one of the former. This Island Earth sees humans getting involved with humanoid aliens. Who have big foreheads and white hair. You get the usual comedy moments at their usual points though. If you love the show, you'll love this. If it's new to you, then it is going to be a matter of opinion as to how funny you find it. The riffing is of a good quality throughout. Not that much is laugh out loud funny, but some gags are pretty good. Mostly it does hit the mark quite consistently. The comedy sketches are pretty good ones too, and the cinematography does really make it look like a movie as opposed to the tv show, which was always shot on video. It does open the main location of the show out a bit also. But what stops this from getting a higher rating is the length. It's just too short. Regular episodes would go just over ninety mins. But this is only seventy four. Thus you only get two rather than three sketches in the middle. And if you're trying to fit an eighty six min long film like this Island Earth into something like that, you end up cutting quite a bit. Thus the film being watched does feel a bit too truncated, and as if you're missing a lot of the plot. All in all though, it's like watching a pretty decent episode of the show. Not one of the classic ones, but one that is fun while it lasts. Thus as a film, it's a four star release.Full episodes of the show can be found to view on you tube, if you would like to know more.Being quite an old dvd, this has no subtitles, and the only language is English. Which is to say that it doesn't have an option for such, so it's all you get.Extras: A stills gallery. The original cinema trailer. And a five minute long behind the scenes feature. Quite interesting viewing, for sights of it being made and of one key cast member out of makeup.

Finally a UK release for Mike and the bots!
Criminally unknown in the UK MST3K is a cult phenomenon. Simply a guy (Mike or Joel) plus his two robot friends, the senstive Tom Servo and the caustic Crow T Robot watch the worst movies ever and "riff" them. This is a spin off movie thats actually shorter than an episode of the TV show. Its pretty puerile, quite silly but always fun and nearly always laugh out loud funny. This is a great place to start for aspiring MISTIES. Here they watch This Island Earth and prodice lots of great riffs concerning bad science, bad aliens, the hero's chump sidekick and the biggest car in America.Qouting riffs doesnt really work as you have to qoute the movie then qoute the riff but here goes.Joe (chumpy sidekick): You know what my kids would say?Crow T. Robot: YOU'RE NOT MY REAL FATHER?Anyways MST3K is great. Be a MISTIE.

Normal View, Normal View! Normal View! Normal View!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I am a HUGE fan of MST3K and was delighted to be able to find the movie on a Region 2 disk. The reproduction of the film is excellent, there are a couple of extras although they don't amount to much to be honest. Mike and the bots set about the film with their usual zeal and panache, and a couple of the lines are belly achingly funny. I can't recommend this film highly enough. Once you've seen this check out the rest of the series, also The Film Crew, and Rifftrax for more of the same by the same people.

MST3K at their best
I love MST3K but when I found a movie, well excited was an understatement especially when I realised the movie they were featuring was This Island Earth, another great 50's Sci-Fi opera. If you have not seen any MST3K its can't be explained you just need to watch it! Got a sense of humour then thats all you need... Enjoy

Immer wieder lustig
Der Humor ist einmalig. Oliver Kalkofe als Synchronsprecher ist die beste Wahl gewesen.

MST3K: The Movie on BluRay
THIS REVIEW IS FOR MST3K: THE MOVIE....Ordered on Monday morning and it arrived Friday morning, so that was great because it was shipped separately from my other item. I have wanted this movie on BluRay for a while, so I am super happy with this purchase. This movie never fails to lift my spirits with some sillinessCase comes with the two disks (one BluRay and one DVD). The movie looks great, crisp and clear. The movie is full screen (it is from 1996).There are NO subtitles. There are no language choices. The extras are fun for geeks like me especially when it comes to the ideas that they had and how they evolved into the product we got. I am pleased that they added in lots of extra stuff on a movie that is over 20 years old. The two documentaries are current (2013) and cover production of the movie as well as the history of the source movie "This Island Earth".And then there are deleted scenes, which just add to the fun, and my personal enjoyment :)5 stars because I suddenly have a refreshing mint flavor
