Noise and fumes on a summer evening
Living in Chicago's West Pullman community about 3 miles northeast of Raceway Park, our summer evenings were always noisier and "smellier" during the racing season. About 8 o'clock in the evening the prevaling southwest wind would bring the sounds, and often the smells, of the midgets and stock cars competing at the track in Blue Island. When we weren't running to the drive-in theatre in Riverdale, it was off to the track to see Bud Koehler in his 77 add to his win record. The teen age years of the 50's were fun and carefree, and the dirt track and small town country feeling generated at Raceway added so much to the pleasant memories of growing up. This book and its many many photos brings it all back so perfectly.

There were more Drivers than shown.
Yes Raceway Park was a special place. No where did anyone race 4 times a week. The book failed to break down statistics of the drivers. Give stories of GREAT drives to win. How starting in the back and coming to the front. Cars lined up for the feature all the way to the middle of the back stretch. Most important was the support classes. The rookie class with my favorite Don Sayney. No picture of him at all. He was champ and if I am correct he had to move up to late models after that championship. No photo, sad. My father in law raced there in the 50's Al Williams. For a fact there were some GREAT stories. That was what I thought i would be able to read along with photos. My favorites, VanAllen, Pronger, Oldenberg, Young, Simomson, Kullman and Sayney. The enemy was the 77. Convertibles were great. Just no stories.

Well researched book
If you're like I am and was in your teens in the sixties and hung around Raceway Park in Blue Island, IL, you're going to find this a great book. Brings back a lot of memories. Also there are a lot of old photos. Great Book.
