Range:0-6"  |  Resolution:0.001"  |  Measurement accuracy:+/-0.001"  |  Part Number:120A-6 W/SLC The Starrett dial caliper has sharp black graduations every 0.100" on the no-glare, satin-finished stainless steel bar, and graduations on the dial every 0.001". One full revolution of the dial is equivalent to 0.100". These calipers have knife-edge contacts for measuring both inside dimensions (ID) and outside dimensions (OD). The knife-edge contacts can be used to scribe parallel lines on the workpiece. This caliper can be used with one hand through operating the fine adjustment roll with the thumb. The lock screw locks the dial bezel and holds the sliding jaw in position. The depth rod is integrated into the rack of the caliper, unlike many calipers which offer a detachable depth rod, or none at all. The hardened stainless steel components, including the bar, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod, offer corrosion resistance, increased accuracy, and long life. Positive split gear anti-backlash control offers increased accuracy over standard gear configurations. Backlash is the amount of clearance between mated gear teeth in the caliper controls, which prevents the gear teeth from jamming. It is undesirable to have much backlash due to the lack of precision offered by the increased amount of play between gears. Certain gear designs can minimize or eliminate backlash; split gear systems actually split the gear into two gears, each half as thick as the original gear. One of these gears is then fixed to the shaft while the other gear is allowed to turn. The free-turning gear is connected to coil springs that rotate it until all of the backlash in the control system has been eliminated. The rack teeth point down to keep foreign matter from clogging the gear operations. This prevents measurement errors where metal chips could interfere with proper caliper operation. Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, and machining. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The digital caliper takes a differential by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD that displays a single value in English and/or metric units. The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company was founded in 1880 and is headquartered in Athol, MA.

Not the quality I had expected from a Starrett tool.
Starrett has always been my choice for the highest quality, precision measuring equipment. I promptly received the 12 inch calipers, however found them to be defective/ out of adjustment upon inspection of the tool. The sliding jaw was very tight, and would not effectively provide an accurate measurment. I attempted to contact "Ideal Precision", in hopes to resolve this with a quality tool in exchange . The only solution offered was a refund upon return of this item. I have to assume a quality replacement was not available from this company, as I had hoped. I have now received a full refund as promised.

No case great tool.
First off great tool as expected from Starrett. My problem with this is after spending around $400 with tax it comes with no case to help protect it. The only case Starrett has that you can buy for it is wood and another $50. When you buy a 6” dial caliper for $130 it has a nice durable case for it. I work out in the field and not in a shop so all my tools get driven around in a service truck. Without a good case this thing isn’t gonna last a week. The tool itself if 5star just disappointing that they would leave out such a important thing on such a expensive/ precision tool.

Starrett At Its Best
I have had numerous calipers, including two others made by Starrett (an electronic display and the imported 3202-6) but the R120A-6 has quickly become my absolute favorite. The red faced dial renders the pointer shadow almost invisible. Accuracy is in precise agreement with feeler gauges and gauge blocks at numerous values between 0.001 and six inches), the sliding action is perfect, and the overall quality is excellent in every respect. If you use calipers on a regular basis I think you'll find like I did that the higher cost is very much worth it.

Starrett quality
Starrett comes through again. Use these every day for quality control and also machine parts. Easy to read and durable. Have placed on vibrating machines a few times and had them fall off, only to read zero again on the dot. Find myself reaching for these more than my old SPI calipers now.

Reliable, accurate, well-made.
So glad I got this caliper after researching quite a bit. It has worked flawlessly since I got it. This is definitely the type of thing where you get what you pay for. Im never disappointed in my investment on good quality tools!

this is a real bargin - a great instrument
This instrument gives the user true confidence in the accuracy of it's readings. I would recommend it to anyone wanting a quality caliper.

Good Calipers
These calipers seem to be high quality. They wern't quite as smooth as I expected. Checked it on a 1/2" plug gage and a 1" gage block. It was spot on even after several months. Sadly, they had to be sent in for repair when someone dropped them and damaged the tip of the jaws.
