Poignant and real
An emotional and joyful book about a working-class Japanese American family in Iowa. Kira-Kira captures universal emotions of love, sadness, and healing with great empathy and captivating language.

Poignant, eye opening
I taught this book to 5th/6th graders in a book club. It was deep, but emotionally appropriate for their development, met their skill levels in reading, was engaging, and offered amazing discussion on family themes, discrimination themes, history, loss, and symbolism. Heart moving. Poignant. Funny. Definitely read.

Good read
This is a book I would definitely recommend. I wish there had been a bit more "kira-kira" - real sparkle! - to the writing in places. The reader needs to experience exactly what that feels like, and that would have to be created by an extremely good writer. And a good editor was needed at times along the way, too, especially for the ending. As with many books, the first part is much better written than the last, which feels rushed and under-polished. Too bad. Still, this is a good story, worth reading.

A Living Book
C. S. Lewis once said "A children's book which is good only to children must, of necesity, be a bad children's book." This book was written for children - well, middle-schoolers - but it's a beautiful book, warm and rich and moving. I loved spending time with Katie and Lynn, loved being a part of their world and their culture.I first picked up this book because I thought it would be like a children's version of A Passage to India and The Namesake, two books I love because they capture perfectly how I feel as an American living in Peru; never quite fitting in to Peruvian culture, but also no longer fitting in to American culture. The book does touch lightly on those themes, but the focus is much, much more on the strength of the relationship between the two sisters. It reminded me a lot of my sister, even though our relationship was very different, and I loved it for that.Kira Kira is a living book - Charlotte Mason fans and most homeschoolers will know what I mean - and deserves its place on my shelves and in my heart. And yes, I cried at the end. :)

beautiful story with tragic ending
It’s symbolic filled with culture moral lessons history and relationships. I loved the family bonds and how much the characters grew. The ending was sad but really taught a good lesson to the readers and Lynn’s death was a fate for the betterment of their family

Beautiful book
My daughter read this book for a school project and said it was great! I walked into her room and saw her crying, apparently the book had a surprising plot twist that made her very sad

An essential coming of age story.
Kira Kira translates to 'glittering' in Japanese. Our narrator, Katie Takeshima talks about the struggles her family and herself had to go through when she was a child. Her family were Japanese Americans and owned a grocery store in Iowa. In the beginning of the novel, the family is seen moving to a Japanese Community in South Georgia, in search of a better life.Katie's parents are extremely hard-working individuals. Lynn, Katie's older sister is her absolute favourite person in this whole world. Katie followed Lynn in everything and tried her best to keep up with her as according to Katie, her sister is perfect. Lynn loved Katie and their younger brother Samson with her whole heart and protected them. The Takeshima family was living hand to mouth but at least they were happy till an unfortunate death in the family shatters them. How the family heals from it, is what is important now. This book is for children and it shows how the author brings before the harder truths of life in the language of children. Some might think it's too brutal for children to understand the hardships portrayed in this book at their age, but we shouldn't forget that many many children are going through much much worse than this. It's not very uplifting I agree, but it does portray compassion and that things will heal with time. But does Kira Kira truly shine? Well, that depends on the reader.

Felt cheated
The story is nice but rec'd a mass paperback copy. The mrp 529 mentioned here is wrong. It is 299 so the discount shown is misleading
