Rational approach to treatment of cancer, including Vit.C ( Linus Pauling/Ewan Cameron)
This excellent book by Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling, original Founder, and Ewan Cameron, original Director of the Linus Pauling Institute for Science and Medicine, was updated in 1993 and therefore may not be seen as "current" by some. Yet it is STILL a gold standard for a readable, and rational, book that helps patients and caring health professionals understand the very nature of cancer, and the value and limitations of many conventional and some unconventional forms of treatment of cancer, so that they can have informed discussions with their surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, and others with whom they come into contact after being diagnosed with cancer. In addition, it provides their own views about how Vitamin C may help cancer patients and survivors. Health care experts still consider Vitamin C and nutritional therapy an unconventional or alternative therapy and the work of researchers in this area are often on the fringe of "conventional" methods. The truth, however, is that right now there is still no one single agent or treatment that is reliable to cure every cancer patient or even every patient with one particular kind of cancer. Care still needs to be individualized!Pauling and Cameron acknowledge that there are frauds and there is quackery in medicine. Still, in reading the entire book, Pauling and Cameron successfully make the case, even 20 years after publication, that people involved with the American Cancer Society or the National Cancer Institute and in professional societies and health care organizations, need to open their minds to carefully consider unconventional methods of cancer treatment, even if those methods come from unconventional sources. Unconventional methods should therefore be carefully and thoroughly investigated using the scientific method, even if scientists do not understand the mechanisms of a proposed treatment. Identifying measures and resources, both conventional and unconventional, that can offer some help to cancer patients should make it possible to link measures together to provide "both/and" treatment regimes to reduce suffering and increase assistance to people who develop and cancer and want the best quality of life possible.

A book which make me wonder why vitamin C not has been put on much more research since it was written.
Actually I mostly bought the book for historically having one more book written by Linus, while thinking I wouldn’t get any news concerning cancer, of which I owe around 40 books, but I was gladly surprised when reading the book. For example, it was interesting to read the chapter 2, “The Causes of Cancer”, where we look back in history, starting in 1775 when Sir Percival Pott, a London surgeon, described the cancer of the scrotum that was prevalent among the adolescent chimney sweeps. And since then many other cancers were discovered, among other the “Mule-spinners cancer”, coursed by the cotton mills, lung cancer for the uranium miners, caused by the radon gas, and around 25 – 30 years ago, as I recall it, then the discovering of asbestos cancer. And concerning the asbestos cancer, as written in the book, even more alarming it was as it also resulted in cancer for family member having contacted the workers’ clothes. And actually first in this week, in Denmark, there now have been stated compensation payment of $ 25,000 to each of the still living cancer damaged wives. Besides in this book I first learned about working women who died by bone cancer after painting the dials on watches and clocks with radioactive paint back in 1916 to 1924. And strangely the case of skin cancer in India, caused by persons whom, for not freezing, holding a pot of glowing coals under their clothes.Among other the book is also good as we in the chapter 3, “The Common Forms of Human Cancer”, like in a lexicon reads about around 25 of the most commonly known cancers, and among other about the reason to the cancer, how to try to solve the problem for patients being hit, and the chance in survival.Especially it for me was interesting to read the sides, in the chapter 5, “The Treatment of Cancer by Surgery”, following after the words that a bigger surgery is not necessarily better surgery, and then historically looking at the surgery concerning women breast cancer. It’s awful there to read how much originally was removed from the breasts, besides the tumors, as from around the year 1900 until the 1950s, this caused by following an idea from John Hopkins Hospital. But from Scotland, just after the Second World War, then news came, and now telling only to remove the diseased breast, and then from other places, in the early 1950s, that even less had to be removed. And then finally, also in the 1950s, from Finland, results telling that more survivals followed when only the tumor was removed. But here in Chiang Mai it to me looks like they still nearly are using the tradition from the John Hopkins Hospital, as I realized it, when my Thai wife, 4 years ago, then had bout of her breasts removed, while only having a single tumor on 1/3 inches, and nothing ells. The Thai doctors in the hospital told her, after the scanning’s result, that she would have to come next day for by surgery having removing both of her breast, for else she would die within a week! I, and even an English doctor, told her that this was nonsense, but she was scared and followed the Thai doctors order. Later a doctor from Bangkok, daughter to a family she knew, here in Chiang Mai, and told her that the doctors in Chiang Mai are doing totally wrong. One, day a year later, when she returned home from control in the hospital, she told that that day 30 women were at surgery for breast cancer, and all would have both of their breasts removed. Strangely, as her surgery doctor, only around 40 years, and educated in Sweden, and where Sweden absolutely is up to date concerning doctor knowledge and work.In the book in each of the chapters 20 and 21 we from A to Z get illustrative patient cases, where we in all of the cases realize how the vitamin C actually helped, either by resulting in less, or no side-problem, living longer and even cases in being cured. In some of cases we read about persons who by emergency are brought to hospitals, and with view to die within a day, but are given 8 - 10 grams of vitamin C, then the following day are better, and after a week returned home. And at home re-continuing a normal life, for then suddenly 2 – 3 month later again getting sick, and then die within a day. But in any case by the vitamin C getting a longer and healthy finishing life. But one of the more thoughtful cases is concerning a 55-year-old wife who in 1978 became aware, when making her Japanese paintings, difficulty in coordinating her right hand. The problem increased by weakness on the right leg, difficulty in speaking and in swallowing. When she then went to Stanford Medical Center, it by scanning showed up that she had a 2.5-cm-diameter tumor lying deep in the left part of the brain. She was advised immediate operation, but told that she might be paralyzed in the right arm and leg. She then refused, scared for maybe living so in the future, and then went to another neurosurgeon, but he told the same. But a relative told her about an article she had read about vitamin C, and then the wife started on daily taking 10 grams of vitamin C, not much believing in that it would help, but scared by the thinking on being paralyzed. A month later as she was feeling a bit better, she then again when for scanning, and it showed up that the tumor had partly diminished, and deformed. Two month later scanning showed that the tumor had totally disappeared, and she was back healthy as before. The book is among other also helpful with the chapter concerning the treatment of cancer by respectively beside Surgery, also by Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Hormones, Immunotherapy, and Unconventional forms of cancer treatment. We there learn that each of these treatment is helpful for same cancers and without help for other. Even the “bad” Chemotherapy is advised in some cases. The book is actually a scientifically report, by showing the many results by using vitamin C, and in the appendixes, statistically putting them together. But after reading the book, which is printed 25 years ago, I wonder why nearly no researches has been made by especially the state of USA. Probably as the medical firms, which yearly are paying half of the money to FDA, don’t want this, as they can’t patent the vitamin C, and thereby earn enormous much as when having a patent.

Brilliant read
Excellent ground-breaking work from Pauling and Cameron.Cannot believe that this is the first UK review. It may sound morbid but it is fascinating, not morbid at all.It is based on the first-hand real-life work of these two tremendous human beings, using high dose Vit C as a therapy for treating people with cancer. The therapy is analysed and explained logically and the benefits SO obvious,we must be so stupid to ignore them.Read in conjunction with Prof Sydney Bush`s `700 Vitmanin C secrets` and others like Klemmer.
