Summa Theologiae: A Concise Translation

Great insight into doctrine and concise and efficient translation with helpful notes a chapter summaries. Can be a difficult read but well worth the effort

I've bought this book twice. I gave my last copy to a young man in Canada who is discerning the priesthood. I had to buy it again because...well, it's the Summa. It will take my whole life to truly grasp it. And because of St. Thomas Aquinas. Through the grace of God, I encountered some details about his life that got me excited all over again to read this. What an incredible man! What an amazing Saint! The Summa is a treasure.

If you are interested in learning theology and Thomas Aquinas, you need to read this first!

A nice way to make Thomas accessible to the modern reader. The aughor captures the spitit and exceptual mind of Aquinas. A summary of key distinctions woild have been helpful at the beginning of each section. Read this in conjunction with Kreeft's short and highly readable digestions of this important thinker.

Arrived brand new and as desc. Great version of the Summa. Be advised though not unreadable, it IS smaller or smallish print so just wear your glasses to read. Throughly worth it though and would buy again.

I struggled with accessing Aquinas for my dissertation. I found McDermott's publication very accessible and very useful indeed. I owe McDermott a debt of gratitude! Even though it is a sizeable book, it is not cumbersome and it is portable. It is well written and for me, is the best translation of Aquinas' Summa Theologiae.

トマス・アクィナス『神学大全』は、マルセル・プルースト『失われた時を求めて』と並んで、その膨大な長さのために、読み始めて途中で挫折する人を続出させた作品の一つである。というよりも読む前から挫折させられた人が大半だろう。しかし、『神学大全』という書物を哲学書として見る限り、たしかに神学用語やキリスト教の知識に縁のない人にはとっつきにくいが、「初心者のために無駄なく順序良く書いた」と本人が述べているように、最初から読んでいけば、概念説明もきちんとなされており、難解と言われる『形而上学』『純粋理性批判』『精神現象学』『存在と時間』などと比べれば、はるかに分かりやすい。だから、問題はやはりあの長さである。この本は、『神学大全』の異論―解答形式を解体して、一連の文章としてスムーズに通読できるものとして、現物をおよそ６分の１にまで圧縮要約している。それでも600ページを超えるが、挫折するほどの長さとは言えまい。およそ６分の１の労力で、『神学大全』の豊かな泉に浴することができるのだからもうけものだ。著者の嗜好のせいで偏りのある入門書を読むのは、場合によっては有害になるが、そういう心配もいらない。もちろん、本物と対峙する前に、全体の構図を頭に入れておくためにも有益な書である。

A great start for those studying Aquinas.
