Every Picture Tells a Story
This is a beautifully produced, thoughtfully curated collection of maps from England's respectedThe National Archives. It's visually arresting and fascinating in both content and explanation. It includes little treasures like a map drawn by 22-year old George Washington in his early days as a surveyor for the British militia and one of the few surviving maps from the 18th century to record the topographical distribution of native Americans in the Carolinas. It also features quirky maps you might not see anywhere else like a map of routes to the Great Exhibition in 1851 presented on a lady's kid glove and it goes into the sort of detail and context that give maps their richness and meaning. Sections cover early maps, city maps, maps of the countryside, military maps, sea maps, colonial maps, historical maps, and maps used in imaginative (and collectible) ways. All in all, an eyecatching and informative book that belongs on any map lover's bookshelf.
