Having recently moved to a farm in South Africa this book is very useful as I've already have a few snake visitors. The details on each snake are very thorough. However, in terms of identifying a snake that you don't know, you have to go through all the pages, looking for one that matches.

By far the best snake identification guide on southern Africa on the market today !I have got the first version of this book as well, it was good, but this one is really good.First of all the book has got a normal size, a lot of these guides are small and are therefore handy to pack but difficult to use. This one has not as it is A4 size.Photos are generally of good quality and of live animals and give you allready good identification keys.The drawings besides the text shows you in a blink of an eye what the head of the snakes looks like,venomous or not, and if so how venomous, nocturnal/diurnal,ground or tree dwelling and size.Text is good as well as the distribution mappes.Conclusion ?!Interested by southern African snakes ? Buy this book.Going to southern Africa and need a field guide ? Buy this book.

Great book! Lots of information on all of the snake species located in southern Africa. It gives you information on the distribution, length, scale counts and structure, physical attributes for identification, habits, preferred habitat, danger to humans, venom, food and feeding and similar species of each snake. Lots of photographs are also present to support the information provided. Each snake also has its different common names listed, as well as its scientific name.It also starts with general information on the misgivings about snakes. it then moves onto general snake behaviour. The counting of snake scales and their scale structures is also present in the book. It also gives other information on the different types of venom, their symptoms, and what anti-venom is required to combat them It also gives a photographic guide to applying bandages and other first aid treatment for snake bites. There is also a little bit of information on the keeping of snakes as pets or in captivity and what is required to do so effectively. There is other information, also.All in all a great book if you are planning to go to South Africa and find snakes or if you are a snake lover in general and just want to educate yourself.

This book is a very good buy. Its very informative and details are great for a novice like me or even professionals. would recommend this book to anyone

Amazing book, filled with tonnes of information about snakes and their bites and how to deal with them. Must buy for snake fanatics! Just brilliant, learning so much.

This is a super snake book. The descriptions are very clear, and supported by excellent range maps and illustrations. For anyone wanting a complete guide to South African snakes, this is it!
