Wonderful illustrations that introduce children to the Civil War.
The Cicil War is a difficult topic for younger children. This accurate story is told and learned through the eyes of young children.

Poignant story of two Union Soldiers for children
I forgot I used to read and study the illustrations of this book often as a child. We didn't have a plentiful library and I treasured and re-read this one often. When I recognized the cover on a Read-Aloud Revival's post, I knew I wanted it in our home library. Upon the book's arrival, memories and feelings came flooding back to me as I looked through the pictures. Then I read it for the first time in decades, weeping as I experienced the story in the context of mourning for the recent unjust deaths of black men and women. Pinkus Aylee's story is an important one as we help our children understand some of our country's history. I'm so glad for this book and the bridge-building it represents.

This true story will render you speechless as tears start to flow
Used this as part of our study of the Civil War with grandsons, ages 10 & 13. Though apparently aimed at younger readers, this is a powerful tale when older readers read and appreciate it in context of the war: empathy, brotherhood, the tragedy of war, slavery and unequal treatment of blacks and whites. It will knock off the socks of readers of any ages.

Great Book
Such a great mentor text to use with my 5th graders. We used it to talk about point of view and perspective.

Pink and Say facing unimaginable dangers
Two Civil War Union soldiers are brought together in horrific circumstances with unimaginable dangers and forge a friendship. Any more information would involve a spoiler alert but trust me, you will be riveted by this tale superbly told and illustrated by Patricia Polacco. This copy arrived to replace one that had worn out from love and adoration in the library where I work. Many thanks!

Pinkus Aylee, I've said his name and will always remember
This is the first Polacco book that I ever read; I was instantly mesmerized. PINK and SAY is one of the six Patricia Polacco books I gave to my daughter for her birthday. She is a new second grade teacher and I wanted her to have books that have worked for me, a seasoned educator. This is another touching story written in memory of Pinkus Aylee, a former slave. During the Civil War, this young boy saved the life of Sheldon Russell Curtis (Say) who was Polacco's great, great grandfather. Although this book had a tragic ending, the story is a poignant tribute to an interracial friendship that has been kept alive through the generations of Polacco's family. I have used this book as a great multi-cultural lesson.Polacco's family pays tribute to Pinkus Aylee by repeating his name. Through this lovely book, generations will now be able to hold his memory in their hearts.

Very REAListic Fiction: Civil War, Slavery
This may be a picture book, but the pictures are not only what's fantastic and moving. The words can bring the reader to tears--at least this reader. It may be hard to read the book aloud to children in grades 4-12 without choking up.The main characters are admirable, and their suffering during the Civil War is both heroic, sad and tragic. This book is about the war, about slavery, and about the good and bad of human nature. The story claims to be true (within the text), but is listed in fine print as juvenile fiction. So, some are going to be confused. Best to call it realistic fiction.Realistic Fiction: U.S. Civil War, slavery The Creative Teacher: Activities for Language Arts (Grades 4 through 8 and Up)
