Jim Thorpe, Original All-American

Quick read, and such an amazing story of success through those less tolerant times.
Heard about Jim Thorpe as a child, but wanted to learn more about his story. The author tells the story in Thorpe's voice, and you believe it is him speaking to you.

A Good Summary
This is an excellent summary of Jim Thorpe's life and achievements up to the Olympic Medal scandal. It provides a summary of Thorpe's life afterwards. Thorpe was a giant on the Americans scene prior to WWI. As such, his story should be known. The book was written in the first person and the author makes it clear that everything in the book has been substantiated as actually happening. The author looked up old letters and interviewed people to find the actual words Thorpe said to include them in the dialogues in the book.

for anyone born in Oklahoma, or anyone interested in sports, or 12-12 yrs to adult
I returned the two books I had ordered; it was written as by the author himself, beginning w it was "sunlight" coming through the window when he was born -- the original story I have, and very important, is that he was born (and twin brother) during an rainstorm with lightening -- the lightening shown through the window as his mother was giving birth-- hence, she named him Wah Pah Tho--"path lit by lightening."

Jim Thorpe: Original All-American
I really enjoyed reading about Jim Thorpe. Although I knew he was famous in the world of football, i had no idea how skilled he was in the various other athletic arenas. Although it was a little redundant at times, I gained a lot of knowledge and empathy for all that Native Americans went through and encountered in this country as a minority race in the world of sports.. I recommend it as essential reading for sports fans and anyone interested in the historical role of Native Americans in sports.

Love this book!
I read this book as a child and have now purchased it for my son. He is about halfway through it and cannot put it down. Highly recommend for any sports enthusiast or history buff, a very good read about American history.

Fills generation gap
Based on phone reviews from my grandson & his mom, this is a great read, packed with credible history of growing-up-Oklahoma in Indian Country, forced into Boarding School horrors off reservation -- and habitually running away.Jim Thorpe, however, ultimately turned into what many consider the best athlete of his day - perhaps even the last century. "Very well written", says my daughter, who picks it up after her son falls asleep to polish off another chapter.

Good info on his early years
Very disappointed. It gives a great account of his early years though. However it was a broad account of his life I wanted
