The Great Northern Railway: A History

Excellent Railroad History
My book arrived in perfect condition and as described by the seller, like new opened once maybe. While much of the volume revolves around the financial story surrounding the Great Northern, all of that matters when it comes to understand the building of that road. Overall I am very happy to add it to my library.

Great Northern Scholarly History
Although too scholarly for many readers this work has a definite place in the hands of any United States railroad devotee who is seeking specific history; economic, equipment and management of one of the most important railroads in the overall railroad development in the United States. The difficulties in constructing this line were probably exceeded only by the Denver and Rio Grande in constructing its line from Denver to Salt Lake City over and through the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Originally three separate companies constructed lines through the most northern tier of States from the northern mid west to the Pacific Northwest with the ultimate goal of connecting Chicago to Seattle's Pacific Ocean seaport with its access to the Orient. Now all of these are consolidated into one.

In-depth look at the business of the Great Northern
A meticulous and scholarly history of the Great Northern, from its Minnesota origins in the 1850s, to the turn-of-the-century Empire Building decades under James. J. Hill, to the 1970 merger with the Northern Pacific that created the Burlington Northern. Well illustrated with vintage black and white photos, this book--at 360 pages--is nonetheless more of a business case study than a pretty coffee table book, reflecting the Harvard Business School connections of its authors and publisher.

Good general history, business summaries
The quality of printing(360 pages, hardcover) is very high with very good picture resolution, and good choice of high quality historic photography. It's hard for one book to get into much detail on all topics, but this one did well in overview, covering the entire railroad over it's long history and wide geographic expanse. I wanted more pictures of iron mining, and ore docks, but not much was covered there. Still a nice book, well worth owning, and one of not many on The Great Northern.Heilung

... is a well written and comprehensive history of the Great Northern. The authors are well know academics
This is a well written and comprehensive history of the Great Northern. The authors are well know academics. While comprehensive, this is actually an abbreviated version of a larger, more academic version of the book by the same authors.
