Amazing.
Wriiten by M Scott Peck, a psychoanalyst and Senior Psychiatrist at the famous Millview hospital in the States, this beautiful, challenging book is the product of many years of research. It is the distillation of the considered thoughts of a man who was exposed to the entire spectrum of human mental illness. His assertion that all mental illness derives from the unwillingness to confront reality is very convincing and he presents a number of theories that are difficult to refute and offer many opportunities for healthy introspection.Presenting interesting viewpoints on numerous aspects of life including discipline, religion, love, sexuality and reward, this is perhaps the fastest way to find yourself ‘on the couch’ and taking charge of your own personal development.Grounded in a benevolent will for self-improvement for all, the author’s writing is warm, compassionate and firm in its conviction. Although there are a couple of aspects of his thinking which may well have developed further had the book had have been written in modern times, the vast majority of the subject matter is as relevant today as it will always be. It’s possible that the information that is currently surfacing with regards the structures of the banking system and the practices of healthy sexuality would have informed his approach to a couple of issues but on the whole, this is debatable and can easily be overlooked in light of the very great value this book offers.Highly addictive, this book lights a desire to be instantly re-read and will undoubtedly be a life-long companion and well-thumber addition to anyone’s bookshelf.

A necessary guide to recovering from abusive relationships
Having reached the age of 51 & never addressed the abusive actions of my parents until I started taking seizures & having flashbacks, this book was recommended to my by my counsellor. It opened my eyes to the damage done to me mentally & emotionally. It is written in such a way that you easily understand what the writer is saying. I have found it helpful in my journey of self discovery & understanding of how & why I am the person who thought they were a victor but realised I was actually a victim always expecting & accepting bullying & manipulating behaviour in all my relationships. I am now well on the road to recovering & gaining strength every day. I often go back to this book when I find myself falling back to the old traits of accepting abuse.Wether you have been abused or know someone who has I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I'm going to read the follow up books as I have been so inspired by this one.

Invaluable!
There should be a copy of this on everybody's book shelf. It is an old classic. A beautiful, educational balance of psychology & spirituality. From the definition of Grace explained, to the dynamics of co dependency and how so many relationships are based on fear and not love. It's unusual to find spirituality and psychology blended together so well in a book, in my experience. Should be on your list of 'books to read before you die' in my opinion. Especially considering that you may not get the chance afterwards ;-)
