The classic camp shovel
I bought one folding shovel that was more the size of a garden trowel, but I still wanted something portable that could do some serious work. I recalled the green painted Army camp shovels that were popular in the 1960s, but I wasn't sure that such a thing could be found any more. This is basically that same shovel, although with a few saw edges added to it.This kind of shovel is of course short, so it does not replace the convenience of a full sized shovel for large or lengthy jobs. Still, it is fully what can be hoped for in this type of camp shovel. I used it recently to dig mud and river rocks to manage some flooding, and it worked well for that, again with the job being relatively small. A "garden trowel" would certainly not have held a practical amount of rock and mud with each stroke. The metal of this shovel is strong and tough, the latch holds well, and the handle is a sturdy hardwood with a waterproof finish. This shovel can take a beating without failing, and the weight is reasonable. I'll definitely carry it on excursions where a small shovel can come in handy.
