i was disappointed the book does not have many photos and the book is quite small. i would not reorder this due to size and i want more with xmas activity with stories. no pun intended the quality is more for kids and yes i would recommend it maybe except it would not hold there interest. sorry i feel like i wasted alot of money.

This book was published in 1912 but is the best source of information about the origins of Christmas I have been able to find. There are two sections. The first is about Christmas and Christianity and the second is pre-Christian winter festivals. I bought it for the second part of the book but found myself fascinated by the Christianity section as well. Amazing information! I would strongly suggest this book to anyone with interest in the history of Christmas. It certainly put me more in the "Christmas Spirit" and less bogged down by the commercialism of the holiday.

This book was originally published over a century ago, but it is still relevant today. It has a pile of information presented in a somewhat archaic manner.

A most wonderful compilation of customs and traditions. A truly great holiday read. Very pleased with this book. I love everything about Christmas and have gained much knowledge from it.

I bought this instead of another book that was not as well researched.

The book was recommended by an individual who performed as the Victorian Lady for a holiday English Tea at our church. It is a fabulous resource for information on the history of holiday traditions of that time period.

This books will offer an excellent overview of Christmas if you can get through the prose. Written in a by-gone time, this book may challenge readers.If you can get through the awardness of the writing style, please prepare for Christmas treat!

I bought this book bc I was researching the folk history aspect of Christmas. This is an old book, but well endowed with history and lore.

This is a serious & more a scholarly book rather than a fun & colourful book you might look at with your children.As a student of history, I thoroughly enjoyed it & found it very interesting.If you want some quick & comprehensive facts, check out “The World Encyclopedia of Christmas” by Gerry Bowler. Mostly black & white with some colour plates - also available from Amazon.ca!

Wie interessant einmal zu erfahren, was alles in und hinter unseren vielen Weihnachtsgebräuchen und -riten steckt! Man muss etwas Geduld haben, wenn man dies insgesamt "erlesen" will, doch erfährt man nicht nur viel über anderer Länder Sitten und heidnische Gebräuche, die assimiliert und uminterpretiert wurden, sondern kann einstimmen in mannigfaltige deutsche und englische Poesie, Weihnachtslieder und Dramenverse. Andere Festtage des Christlichen, wie der Martinstag, das unbekanntere Thomas- und Clemensfest, die in die "popular devotion" eingemeindet wurden, lernt man von allen Seiten (christian and pagan) kennen, wozu das "Jesuskindele"(zusammengefasst) dann freundlich sprechen kann:"Kannst in mein Dienst stehen ein,Wann dazu wirst gross gnue sein" (S.146)Ein sehr schönes Buch mit einigen (leider unvollkommen abgedruckten, weil im TB nur schwarzweißen) Illustrationen, ausgezeichnet gelungen "based on extensive research…..FOR ENJOYING….and serious study"!
