I sort of used this and I passed the N3 last year
I passed the JLPT N3 this past year, through using this series even though I did not complete all of the books. This book just list vocabulary for the most part. I think the vocabulary in this book is really useful, especially since it teaches so much every day vocabulary that the Genki textbook series did not teach me and it would have been useful to have gone through this book before I studied abroad in Japan for a few months. I also used StickyStudy Kanji on the iOS app store to study with as well; it has a list of JLPT N3 vocabulary (and Kanji), which helped me on the test. I think I used StickyStudy more than this book, but using both probably helped me pass the N3. I definitely suggest working through some kind of JLPT books if you are planning to take the test, because having a Japanese major and going to Japan for a few months to study will not guarantee you know the material on the test to pass it.

Great Resource - Makes JLPT Study Less Horrible
I'm currently studying for the N3 and was a little hesitant to buy any guides because I studied for the N4 only using free resources from the internet. I decided to go with this after realizing how unstimulating (and not great for actually improving my Japanese) studying from a cold list of words was. I'm currently going through all the chapters and making Anki flashcards from the vocabulary words and the phrases the book offers, and even though making my own cards is a lot of work, I'm confident that it will pay off. I can't say how useful it is to see the vocabulary words in action, with useful example phrases that help to indicate grammar and usage. Grouping things thematically (rather than going in random or alphabetical order, hahah, like I did for the N4) is also very helpful for memorization. Studying with this book as a guide, I feel like I'm learning this vocabulary with the goal of actually using it, rather than just stocking a thousand words away just for the JLPT.

Poorly translated, sloppy, and completely inefficient!
This book is merely a typed list of words terrible one-word translations of the new terms. Words in Japanese most of the time only appear in certain contexts, and this book fails to give you those contexts. The point of a textbook is to give you a sense of direction in what you SHOULD be studying when you don't exactly know whats next. While it does give you vocabulary "in order", this book still fails to give you a sense of how you should be using these new terms and they don't even have the common decency to give example sentences. An example of this is the vocab word "ほこりを取る”. The translation just says "dust" but it is not dust, it is the ACTION of dusting!! How simple can it be to translate that? It's absolute incompetence! Now if that was the only problem, I would have given a 2 or 3 star review. The reason it got a one star review is the presentation of information. This book is in four languages (Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean). It would have been easy to just make 3 different books for each translated language, and they probably would have made more money doing it.I could ramble on for hours about how terrible this entire series is. The Memrise community has compiled flashcard decks for the vocab and kanji used in this book, and I will be learning it through Memrise for FREE!

I really like this book
I really like this book; once you read through the instructions for it, is very easy to understand (not sure what the other reviews were complaining about). Like any textbook, it requires dedication and practice. Will probably buy again when I get to N2.

A helpful book for those looking to take N3, but a number of the translations make no sense.
Update:I passed the JLPT N3 on the back of my vocabularly score (43/60). A lot of the vocab on the test was in this book.I've been using this book for the past 3 months to study for the JLPT N3 along with gathering words from other sources (Tobira book, youtube videos, anime, songs, etc.). Before I started using this book, I was barely cracking 50% on JLPT N3 practice tests for vocabulary. Since using it, I'm now consistently pulling in around 50/60 points (which means I could pass the JLPT by simply scoring slightly more than the minimum on the other two sections). The strongest point about this book is the presentation of the information. The vocabulary is split up into daily sections which are themed around one topic (school, shopping, banking, working, etc.) and the book typically lays out how to use words by providing an example sentence and then giving you a term to plug in, such as メールをX with email or 田中さんとX with relationship terms. Its highly recommended you study the vocabulary listed by entering the whole sentence as opposed to just the single word or two, that way you remember the specific use cases for these words. The biggest problem with this book though, is that the writers are clearly not native English speakers. They use words that, as an MBA student, I have rarely ever heard in my entire life, and I consistently test in the top percentile for English; or they use a phrase that simply does not make sense in English. A few examples of this are "落ち着いている" is translated as "Self-possessed", "図々しい" as "impudent/insolent", and ’生意気" as "impertinent". I can only imagine that the authors looked up words in a dictionary and tried to get the closest match they could find as opposed to knowing the words as native speakers. If like me, you work with a tutor on a regular basis, this doesn't pose that much of an issue, as I could simply ask what them what the actual meaning of the words is, but for those that do not, you will probably need to end up looking them up and reading a number of example sentences to figure it out.Overall, this is still a very useful book for the N3 test that has a number of words that will almost certainly show up on the test. Add the entire phrases into Anki and memorize them, and you will ace the vocabulary portion.

Great for vocab, not so much for the JLPT
It's a good, short book on learning vocabulary. Great visuals and review questions to reinforce your knowledge. If you can make flash cards to go along with it, it's a good resource. The problem is, it's not really geared toward the JLPT. I have several of the N3 books and studied them to memorization. I learned a lot and it helped immensely, but when the test began I was shocked at how little I recognized. If you're looking to up your vocab skills, it's still a solid resource.
