Description
- Camel Thorn trees grow up to 18 m tall, with a large spreading canopy that produces shade and animal shelter. Trees older than 10 years produce numerous yellow ball-shaped inflorescences, and trees older than 20 years produce crops of up to 1,200 flat, crescent-shaped seedpods per tree.
- Its preferred habitat is the deep dry sandy soils in parts of South Africa, Botswana, the western areas of Zimbabwe and Namibia. The camel thorn is a protected tree in South Africa.
Germination: Scarify seeds. Soak for 24 hours. Sow seeds about 1/4 inch apart in a seed tray. Cover the seeds lightly with soil (about the depth of a seed), lightly press down the soil and water. Place above ground level in a warm, humid, partly-shaded area. Keep the soil moist but not wet. Germination takes 1-4 weeks.
