It is an old style writing instrument, circa 1940's, so it is more than 75 year old technology, and as such, it will require more attention than a Bic, ballpoint, or roller ball, liquid ink pen, however, even with that having been said, the resulting written quality of a fine fountain pen yields a very unique quality to the cursive written check, note or letter! Those of us who love our fountain pens tend to forgive the fact that we may have to refill it weekly, if we do a lot of writing, or, since I live in Tucson, AZ, where the summers are very hot and very, very dry (<1% R.H.), if I don't use my pen for more than a week it will dry out and I will have to flush it out using distilled water, Please Never use tap or filtered water, especially if your area has hard water! It will just clog things up! If you use the pen on a daily basis it will not dry out and will work great! Two things to remember!1. Don't let anyone else use your pen! Even for writing just a few words, their pressure and angle will be much different from yours and it will wear the nib down very quickly, causing your pen to skip while you try to use it, and until you restore the natural writing angle and pressure points on the nibs surface you will be cursing out the friend you let use the pen! If they want to try out a fountain pen tell them to buy one themselves or buy a Pilot Collegate, portable non-refillable fountain pen, available from Amazon!2. When you first start using your fountain pen it will take a few weeks to wear into your grip and pressure. The more you write with it, the better the ink will flow and the smoother it will write! You are bending and wearing down the nib to fit your personal style of writing and it will be well worth the investment of time and trouble because using a personally worn fountain pen to write with will ruin you! You will NEVER want to write with anything else! I got hooked 20 years ago and have a good number of favorites! Remember to rinse them out if you are not going to be using them for several weeks! Personally, I think any good fountain pen is an excellent gift for any occasion! Graduation included! This is a good quality pen!
