This is the Ultimate practice book!!!!
The is exactly what it says "The ultimate riyaaz book". Riyaaz in classical indian music means the discipline of practice. This is a great book! It is the only one that I have ever seen on this subject. This book has over 650+ sargam exercises in total. The notation is easy to follow. S R G M P D N ' going up the scale and ' N D P M G R S going down the scale. The introduction of the book explains the notes, their names, and intervals within Indian music. Super easy to understand and follow. There are also a few pages with visual keyboards in different key signatures in order to help you get started. The 10 Thaats are listed in order to give you the most important scales within northern classical Indian music. Using the 10 thaats gives you at least 10 different ways to use this book. This books does not cover ragas. But it you have a raga that you are learning from your teacher, you will know how to work it within the different paltas / patterns given. This book "Nuances of Hindustani Classical Music: Raags, Taals, Moods, Rasas, Genres & Gharanasby Hema Hirlekar" goes great with these books. If you are serious about your practice and need something to keep you motivated, then this is the book for you.It was well worth the price of the book. There is nothing out there that is like this.I happen to own every book written in English on Indian Classical music and none of them cover the art of practicing like this book does.

This is an excellent tool for all students of Indian Classical Music
After anxiously awaiting it's arrival, yesterday I received Keith Villaneueva's new book "The Ultimate Riyaaz Book"!This is an excellent tool for all students of Indian Classical Music. The book is based on variations of notes/sargam patterns, which you can apply towards any Raag that you might be practicing. He offers simple and complex variations based on lessons he took (and is currently taking) with the Gurus of the Mewati Gharana. But the exercises can be used by students of any Gharana. In Indian Classical Music, we spend many hours doing riyaaz and repeating note patterns in order to improve our sur (pitch), speed and precision. This book will be a great companion to offer you many variations to work with in that practice. The book is dedicated to our Guruji Radharaman Kirtane, and I am happy to say that a few of my photos of Guruji are included in the book, as well as the beautiful artwork of Shyama Art, Monali Rangwala. Also included on almost every page, are inspiring quotes about the practice of music and the practice of meditation.I am looking forward to discovering all the gems that this book holds!
