This 50-CD set offers a small sampling of Teldec's rich catalog, with recordings by some of the world's great artists, including conductors Andrew Davis, Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, Mstislav Rostropovich and Giuseppe Sinopoli; pianists Martha Argerich, Boris Berezovsky, Cyprien Katsaris, András Schiff, Guher and Suher Pekinel; violinist Maxim Vengerov and clarinetist Sharon Kam; singers Barbara Bonney, Thomas Hampson, Dawn Upshaw, Edita Gruberova, Peter Schreier, Jennifer Larmore, and Chanticleer. Daniel Barenboim recorded exclusively and extensively for Teldec as both conductor and pianist. His acclaimed Wagner opera recordings are represented by highlights from Die Walkure and Tristan und Isolde, while he can also be heard at the piano in Mozart Piano Concertos and playing tangos in his native Argentina with bandoneónist Rodolfo Mederos and bass player Hector Console. As an exclusive Teldec recording artist for nearly forty years, Nikolaus Harnoncourt enjoyed one of the longest relationships with a single record company, making several hundred recordings of music spanning several centuries. A particular highlight of the set is the premiere recording (1930) of Kurt Weill's Dreigroschenoper with the young Lotte Lenya, while the label's many contemporary music recordings are represented by Messiaen's Turangalîla Symphony; Lontano, Atmospheres and Apparitions by Ligeti; and one of Harrison Birtwistle's most significant works, Pulse Shadows.

buy this love this easy peasy
i have bought a bunch of these boxes in the last year. this one was of a series that was offered last year. i got all three of them. this set from the start grabbed my interests. i have heard all the discs by now and can say i learned about more music than i knew about before listening . my personal favorite surprise is the beautiful solo piano version of Beethoven's 9th. fantastic and mind blowing for people like me that had no idea Liszt was writing this music. this was a great addition to my collection. if bought and not enjoyed complain to me. i will not do anything at all, but you will feel better. then play disc 3 again.

Fabulous mastering and production, a superlative musical set of selections for the music lover. The interpretations of this reportoire is splendid. The diverse selections and masterful performances leave little to be desired. More than a worthwhile set to pick up for your collection. The price on this set has doubled new since 2017. Highly recommend.

Superlative variety and value
Teldec was a music label founded as Telefunken-Decca Schallplatten in 1950 in Hamburg, Germany. When it went out of business in 2001, its name and fabulous catalog were purchased by the Warner Music Group, which released this delightful 50-CD sampler. These recordings feature such great classical artists as conductors Andrew Davis, Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Giuseppe Sinopoli; pianists Martha Argerich, Boris Berezovsky, and András Schiff; violinists Maxim Vengerov and Gidon Kremer; and vocalists Thomas Hampson, Dawn Upshaw, and Chanticleer. For decades, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Daniel Barenboim both recorded exclusively for Teldec; you'll hear the former conducting Beethoven, Haydn, Schumann, and Strauss, while the latter not only conducts Mahler and Wagner but also plays Mozart piano concertos and Argentinian tangos. There is enormous variety in this big set, and all types of classical music are represented: romantic and contemporary, orchestral and chamber, solo and choral, warhorses and rarities. Although it includes a number of well-known symphonies and concertos by the major composers, many of the modern choices are far less obvious: works by Webern, Ligeti, Birtwistle, and Messiaen, as well as a 1930 recording of Kurt Weill’s Dreigroschenoper. The classical guitarist Sharon Isbin, jazz saxophonist Paul Winter, and Brazilian percussionist Gaudencio Thiago de Mello collaborate on "Journey to the Amazon," a unique rendering of works by Latin-American composers. This anthology is an unmatched bargain: 50 discs in a sturdy box with a detailed booklet at the price of only a bit more than a dollar per disc. Alas, it does not feature original artwork on the sleeves, but there is such an abundance of splendid music that griping about this omission seems rather like nitpicking. Also recommended are the 51-CD box from Teldec's early music label Das Alte Werk and the 50-CD set from the French label Erato, likewise acquired by Warner. The following is a disc-by-disc listing of the contents by performer, composer, and work:1. Fantastic mish-mash of gold
This is one of my favorite boxes, and I am an inveterate box-buyer. I had none of this music before, and as there are relatively few war-horses in here, I hadn't even heard of a lot of it, nor of some of the performers. Of course it's very subjective, but for me disc after disc got me excited and made me want to hear more by these artists. The overall quality of the performances is very high, and the recording quality is sensational. The Martha Argerich and Boris Berezovsky discs are now perhaps my two favorite discs of piano music, and I have a lot of piano music. You will (obviously) want to track down a list of the recordings [edit: actually, there is a list in the page, just click on the tiny picture] and artists before you make this kind of investment, but if it is material you have an interest in, I will vouch that the performing and recording quality is very good, even sparkling. The sleeves are nothing special, and just have tracks and time on them (no original jackets) and aren't particularly rugged, but the dark gray with the logo is pretty classy.

Mixed bag, but maybe that's what you want
Teldec is a respected label, and I looked forward to this box set with anticipation. To start, the mastering and production is up to typical high standards. The documentation, such as it is, is minimal, which seems to be par for the course in these anthologies. As for the content, well, that's where it's a mixed bag. Teldec has a wide array of artists and repertoire to choose from, and this collection of CDs is eclectic, to say the least. There's some real gems (Liszt's transcription of Beethoven's 9th is a favorite) and some complete misses for me (such as the CD of Birtwistle). I found I skipped over about a quarter of the disks almost completely, simply as they were not of interest, which reduced the value of this box for me. With a higher per-CD cost than many other boxes, it's harder to recommend this one wholeheartedly. If you don't have a large collection, there's bound to be some CDs in here that will fill gaps and perhaps pique your interest, but for those of us with larger collections (and perhaps more clearly defined preferences), I found fewer "must haves" than I would have liked. The recordings are very good across all the disks. Also, there are quality control issues: four of the disks had surface flaws that were audible, annoyingly so.To say the box is a mixed bag is accurate: there's something for everyone here, but I doubt most people will like the complete box. I'll revisit a few of these CDs, but compared to other boxed anthologies available today, I was disappointed. Boxes like Das Alte Werke and the Erato box (from the same company) hold much more interest for me. Factor in the diverse collection in the Teldec box when making your choice of purchases: to me, this is not a "must have" or even a "must recommend".

Interessante raccolta, necessariamente incompleta
