Be the sharpest tool in the drawer, buy this.
Very good design and function. What will impress you the most is the extras included in the box. At this price you should just expect 2 sides of a great stone. Instead you get that, a wooden holder with a rubber gasket that prevents and damgerous or annoying wobble during use. You also get instructions, a leather strop(meh), a knife guide and a flattening stone. You will want to upgrade to a better strop and larger flattening stone soon but if this is your first stone, you could not do better at this price.I have embarrassing kitchen knives that look like I use them to pull nails from boards. Despite all of the nicks and chips in the blade, my chef knife SLIPS through onions like butter from just 10 minutes on the stones. I'm not even that good as a sharpener and the results have been very good. No flaws. I look forward to reviewing other products from this manufacturer in the future. My chisels love me again too.

Works perfectly, fast and gives a super sharp edge when used properly!!!
This Whetstone system works fantastically!!! I did find that using the angle guide to be a little difficult but that might be because I already know how to use a Whetstone to hone and sharpen blades of all types so I didn't use it after about 2 minutes of trying. I would recommend that a first time or beginning sharpener using the guide just so they don't mess up their blades to a point that is beyond repair. One thing that the instructions don't tell you and something that will make quicker work of blade sharpening is instead of using the stroke described in the instructions try using a circular motions all the way down the blade with moderate pressure. It gets rid of the factory edge quicker and will provide an edge that should only need touching up from time to time afterwards.I also recommend using a Food Grade Mineral Oil instead of water to lubricate it as it provides a smoother stroke and you only have to do the first major lube job the first time because you can then store the stone in a heavy duty zipper bag and when you need to use it again all that is needed is a few drops of oil to relube it. Mind you the first time will take the majority of a 16oz bottle of Food Grade Mineral Oil because the lube has to get all the way into the stone but after that a few drops to get started is all that is needed. ***I may edit this review with a video of the motion I am speaking about above at a later date just so folks know what I mean***I have only sharpened 6 knives with it so far and do plan on using the flattening stone before doing anymore as I know a flat stone works better and I don't want to have to work so hard in the future to get it back to flat as the stone does "Cup" in the middle every time a blade is sharpened.

Nice kit, but beware of the grit comparisons!
The only reason for 1 less star is the grit specs could not be compared to anything I could find. They really should have a scale somewhere. I just decided to buy and see what happens. It's a real nice kit though. Well maybe I missed something somewhere, but the 1000 grit is actually more like 100 grit when compared to sandpaper. The 6000 grit is more like 280 grit. I started to sharpen a chisel and saw a huge rough surface starting on the flat side of the chisel with the 1000 grit side. When I went to the 6000 side, not much better. In fact I had to use a new piece of 400 grit 3M sandpaper to "smooth out" the 6000 grit stone side before continuing on to finer grits of sandpaper to get it back to usable condition. I will keep it for starting and reconditioning new bevels and such, but it's not for precision edge woodworking chisels and plane blades.

Never a dull blade again.
For precise blade sharpening and honing. Easy to use instructions and quality product. Great value. Even has a smaller stone to level the larger blocks.

AWESOME
Blade sharpening works great, directions were spot on. Used on 5-6 so far, results are as promised. Used a popular how to video site to get a better sense of the process. Works way better than the garbage ceramic swipe across 2-3 dozen times that I bought sometime back. This is worth the money, love it!

The product is fine, but here's what they don't tell you.
First, and yes, this should be obvious, don't put it away wet. It's been soaking in water for at least 10 minutes, so drying off the outside really isn't enough. I wasn't thinking, dried the outside of the stone, put it in the box,, came back to it about 2 weeks later, and the entire box (stone, bamboo and all) was covered with mildew.Second, there are no instructions on what do do with the plastic guide thing they include in the box. Yes, it goes on your knife, but there are numerous ways the back of your knife can fit, with differing angles, so it matters. I ended up doing it by feel, and using the sharpie method to figure out if I was in the ballpark.Lastly, when you email customer service about how to use the plastic thing, it simply goes unanswered. So in summary, it's a whetstone. Really nothing more than that. They gadgets are useless if you don't already know exactly what you're doing, as the instructions are far from detailed. At least they tell you how to use the flattening stone!

Great sharpening kit, worth the money...
As soon as I opened up my Cali whetstone kit I could tell alot of thought and effort was made to give us a top notch product. I've been using wet and oil stones my whole life and for a good chunk I was a pro forest fire fighter and I was always using stones and files. The quality of this great and I apprieciate that, I already sharpened my Bowie knife and K- bar to get the feel for it and let's say I don't have to buy razors for awhile lol. I want to say a big thank you to you guys ... If you ever need a tester look me up...

Excellent Whetstone
I have been looking for sharping solutions for my knife set. As a hobby chef, you need sharp knives in your kitchen. The Cali Valley Whetstone delivered exactly what was advertised. Very satisfied. Easy to use instructions and loadable user guide was sent to me in an email. Youtube videos were also helpful.Jeremy, Maryland
