If your child loves dogs, then this is a great begginers book. It has great sight words and repeats other words plus the activities in the back helps with all different reading skills.

The Big Dog and Little Dog books are aimed at very beginning readers. If that's the level where your kids are at or like to be read to at, then bingo, you've found your book. If the kids are more advanced in the reading/read to department, I would suggest Pilkey's great Dragon series or Paperboy or God Bless the Gargoyles.
