Brownsville: Stories Paperback – March 6, 2003

Reading this book has been VERY nostalgic for me. Cásares captures everyday life in the valley so precisely in a series of short stories. If you’re from the RGV and no longer living there, you’ll probably find this read accurately descriptive of small city life with a dash of humor. The purpose alone of short stories instead of a novel, I think, adds dimension to all the different characters in this book. A great series of shorts of how strange yet uneventful life can feel to be in a small town like Brownsville.

This should be must-read literature for every Brownsville resident living outside the Valley. Casares touches on the cynicism, the culture, the hope, the tragic comedy of existence in the RGV using the city of Brownsville as a setting. Not only was I really engrossed in the stories themselves, but in my mind I was also thinking "oh hey, I've been there!" and it really added a great dimension to the book.These are short stories, so one ca easily read one a day and not be saturated.

I loved this book so much! This was a book that I had to read for a class but I am so glad I did because it made me relate to my hometown in a way that I hadn't thought of. I am from Edinburg, a stone's throw from Brownsville. I recommend everyone pick up this book.

I'm from the Rio Grande Valley, and I totally related to all of these wonderful and colorful stories.... I'm so glad that the Valley is producing writers of quality like Oscar Casares. I have always been proud of the fact that I am Mexican-American and from The Valley, but I feel even prouder of that fact, when I read a book like this. Felicidades Oscar!
