Great kitchen knife when away from the kitchen
I got this to use as a kitchen knife for car camping. Most of the time, it lives in a drawer with my other lunch utensils at the office, where I use it as a steak knife. It's large and heavy, so it's not ideal for an everyday pocket knife or for backpacking. There are only a couple of things I don't like about the knife, so I'll start with those. Some of the corners of the handle are uncomfortably pointy, so they could easily wear a hole through your pocket. I filed these down, so it's not really a problem, but I would have appreciated it if they did this at the factory. When the blade is in its closed position, it's almost open. The blade is easy to open, so I would feel safer keeping it in my pocket if there were some spring pressure or a locking mechanism to keep it closed. Here are some things I like:* folding...don't need to worry about cutting or puncturing other items in your camp box* long blade* long handle* blunt tip...probably less likely to stab people as they run around in your camp kitchen* locks open* opens with one hand* suitable for chopping, mincing, and slicing...does most of what you would expect from an 8" or 10" chef knife* not too slippery when wet* sturdy* easy to sharpen the entire length of the blade* no rust after maybe 100 washings in warm soapy water

Stan the Man Reviews: Folding, Locking, Camping "Japanese style" Knife.
This is high grade camping gear and fairly large. Despite being called a Japanese knife, it is made in Germany and looks agout as high quality steel as you can get.It locks when open and opens fairly easily. You unlock it by lightly pressing the little flange of metal at the base of the blade inside the groove of the handle. The thing is very sharp and is a little bigger that I expected. Nice for camping, backpacks, cargo pockets, and fishing boxes though you need a pointed knife to fillet a fish. Regular pockets? May be a bit large. If you do carry it, I would put it "point" end down so when you fish it out the blade does not open inside your jeans.High Grade.

I fell in love with this knife the moment I saw them.
I bought 4 of them to be my steak knives! Last night I got to use them for the first time on a nice piece of steak and let me tell you, it cut through the meat like it was butter! :) They arrived a few days ago. <3 I would recommend two things: the first thing would be to always hand wash them, because the dishwasher will ruin the wood and dullen a the knife severely. Trust me, I used to be a professional cook with an Associate degree in culinary arts. Secondly, there is a company called: DMT which stands for diamond Machining technology. They have a variety of sharpening tools for knives. And they have ones that are specific for serrated edges. Some product lines will have extra extra coarse, extra coarse, course, fine, extra fine, and extra extra fine. They have a cone shape sharpener that is stated to be able to make your knife razor sharp! And of course you can buy then on Amazon or go directly to their site. Lastly I would say that they would be great for cutting tomatoes because they will shred through the skin and there will be almost no chance of the knife slipping off unless you make a mistake and of course you can something simple as cutting bread.

It's a good knife, as pictured
Probably Chinese with some german assembly, I looked at the Herbertz site they sell all kinds of knives, most of which are these days MiC. So. With that being said. This knife is HUGE! it's 5.5" Closed. 10.25" open, with a 4.75" blade, 4.375" of which is cutting edge. It's massive in the hand. This is THE knife to carry in the outdoors for your food prep needs. I wouldn't chop a tree down with it unless I ate the crayons i use to sign my name with. But, maybe you caught a Rabbit or a Turkey or maybe you bought a Ham and you took it camping, I know the allure of using an Ontario Bowie to cut your ham with, but it'll demolish the French Bread, this knife will get through both. 4 Stars cause it ain't German, and it definitely ain't Japanese. It's a good knife, as pictured, not as described.

Really surprisingly Good for the price
UPDATE: I have used this knife a lot! Even bringing it inside for kitchen duty and not just for the once in a while picnic or camping trip. Still loving it and it’s held up well! Adding a star to make this a Five.First review : Really surprisingly Good for the price!I have used it for picnic lunches and it cuts hard crust bread and slices cheeses very well.Has some weight to it so not for those "ultralight" hikers

not as advertised!
Blade doesn’t retract fully sits evposed a bit. Design flaw?makes knife wide. So not much of a pocket knife.Disappointed. Cheaply made or a major design flaw....

Portable but does not slice as neatly as a regular bread knife.
Teeth are too big and ragged. The knife tears up softer breads rather than slicing smoothly. I wish there was a fold-up bread knife with a proper blade.
