Tarot Correspondences: Ancient Secrets for Everyday Readers

Mind Blown --> Need nap
Normally, I would review a book after I have finished it, but as I sense that that would be five years from now, I decided to strike with first impressions. This review is from a person who returned to studying a year ago as a result of using the cards to do a daily scry and/or meditation. So, I'm highly interested in receiving symbolic meanings in a deep and connective way. I do not (at least up to now) use them much for divination, though I expect the time for that to come. So, from my perspective: wowzie wow wow wow. Jackpot.Sooo many tables. I've been a little overwhelmed by needing to go to so many different sources to gather different systems of correspondences, so I suddenly feel both relieved to have a lot information mapped out in a uniform and accessible way and also suddenly overwhelmed with a realization of how much there really is. I cannot vouch for the validity of the scholarship of the work (others who are more learned here must do that, please), but as someone who can reasonably claim the title of neophyte, I very much like this book and know that I will be using it a lot in the years ahead. In fact, unlike my other books, I think I will be writing in this one. And, I have purchased a deck of oversized Tarot and a sharpie so I can make some study cards (and protect my 55 year old deck for personal workings). Believe me, I will have to use both the front and back of each card to capture key symbols and notations. The book leans heavily toward Golden Dawn, though the author herself does not practice GD. Consequently, there is a fair amount of reference to Kabbalah. But there are several other systems in these tables, several I had not heard of. Seeing these various systems organized in this way is most interesting, and I think will be enlightening for me. There are suggestions for how to draw meanings suggested by the correspondences, but this is not a book of layouts and how-to interpretations (yay). I would not suggest getting this book on Kindle, except as a portable version of your main study text. I cannot imagine that all these charts are very easy to refer to in the Kindle version.

Perfect tarot reference book + integrating various esoteric systems
I’m a huge fan of the Fortune’s Wheelhouse podcast, and I think this book works really well as a companion. I’m quite process oriented when learning and creating (hello, Virgo in 10th house :) ) and what I like to do is pick a card of the day, listen to the podcast, read the book, and then journal my reflections. This book functions almost like an encyclopedia, with easy to navigate charts and chapters. I’ve been using it occasionally across the last few months and I find that I’m slowly putting the pieces together of how these different systems connect— something that would probably take much, much longer if I were studying them individually. Love the groundedness that this brings to such a symbolic practice. :)

Fantastic book if you get a copy that isn’t messed up.
I’m reading the book, it’s fantastic I get to page 40 and turn the page and there’s the intro again... weird. So I skip through all 40 pages that are in the book AGAIN hopefully to find page 41. No such luck. I get page 89. Pages 41-88 just don’t exist in my copy. I’m bummed because I NEED those pages. The first 40 pages got me hooked. I’m doing an even exchange, hoping I get a copy that isn’t fakakta. The pages I read until I was abruptly stopped were great, it’s a GREAT BOOK. I just need it in its entirety.

Indispensible
T. Susan Chang's friendly approach opens up infinite worlds of tarot correspondences without being overly woo-woo or inscrutable. For serious readers, this is the go-to resource you'll want on your bedstand or next to your altar. All the pieces and parts fit together in well-designed tables that connect the dots between Qabalah, alchemy, the zodiac, even obscure hermetic teachings. Whether you're trying to open a personal portal to the 32 Paths of Wisdom, or if you just want to know if Aunt Betty is going to bring Key lime pie to Thanksgiving again, this book will point you in the right direction. Note: I bought the digital and the paper version of this title, and given the large number of tables and illustrations, I would recommend paper if you have to choose.

Content is Great. Manufacturing is NOT!
I ordered the book and when it arrived I started reading. I got 40 pages in and saw the title page again. Okay, this happens, I set out to do my first return, which was SUPER simple. I shipped my book back the next day, they got it in five days, it took them three weeks to ship me another copy. I just received this second copy and looked at the page numbers... and again after page 40 it starts over again. 1-40,1-40, 89-end. They are accepting my return again but I am getting a refund for this book instead and I will just have my bookstore order it or I will contact someone who can take the time to look at that section and see if it repeats.Again, the book contents are great and I will be getting this book!

Good reference tool but...
This a great compilation of esoteric correspondences, however there are repeat typos within the Roman numerals; 11 is frequently shown as IX (9) instead of XI (11).I’m only 60 pages in and have found a few other minor typos as well, like the exclusion of an article. So if you’re prone to getting annoyed at these things, you’ve been warned. So far, having all of this info in one place is worth dealing with the typos IMO.

A decent one-stop for associations
Besides quite a few typos, the main weakness of the book lies in the fact that many of the correspondences, especially when dealing with things like aromas and animals, comes from the eclectic and deeply flawed "Complete Book of Correspondences" by Sandra Kynes, which seems to pull random associations (with no basis in the western mystery tradition) out of thin air.T. Susan Chang's podcast is pretty useful (though it gets old listening to two middle-aged women giggle about Aleister Crowley's peccadilloes), and this book is basically the show notes. There is much else in the book for those who have listened to the podcast, but it felt a little hollow to me having already heard the rote elemental and mythological associations run through on Fortune's Wheelhouse.

Corrispondenze... e poi?

knowledge is power!
This book was written by a Master of the Tarot. There is a wealth of knowledge in this book! Food for thought! Tobe contemplated and appreciated.
