Not a book for small children
The illustrations are beautiful but definitely not for children under age 6 as the dragons & blood, though done stylistically, aren't suitable for little ones.

Very impressive!
I bought this book for my husband to read to our daughter. But I was very impressed by gorgeous illustrations, the quality of paper and story by itself!

One of my childhood favorites!
I bought this used, since I believe the book is no longer in print. But it's such a gorgeous book, and was a part of my childhood. The best part? The used copy I received is autographed by both Amy Tan AND Gretchen Schields!

An Amazing Children's Book, What Childhood Reading Should Be
I remember reading this as a child, before that my mother read it to me (I'm 30). This book is amazing, from the illustrations to the story itself. They story is rather dramatic, yet realistic. It's far more complex than most children's books today that have been heavily sanitized and are now designed to do the thinking for you. It's a real book. I happened to marry a Chinese man and my son calls his grandmother NaiNai so I love that the girls in this book have a NaiNai and not just some generic Granny. My son is only 2.5 but he really likes this book and I certainly don't mind reading it over and over to him. If there's only one downside to this book it's that there are so few like it left today.
