Partha Mitter's lucidly written 'Indian Art' contrasts most of the books written in unnecessarily difficult academic language of art
In spite of spending almost his entire life in academia, Prof. Partha Mitter's lucidly written 'Indian Art' contrasts most of the books written in unnecessarily difficult academic language of art. This brief writing on Indian Art is invaluable to all kind of people ranging from laymen to art students and academicians.Being a layman I was suggested to read this book and I am reading this book for 3rd time now as I am writing the review. Mostly highlights on Architecture, sculpture and painting from ancient subcontinent to modern practices happening in India.

An excellent choice!
I found the book very educational without being academic in nature. An excellent choice !

Leisure read!
If you have already read everything about indian art, then you can have this. Lacks precision. I was very disappointed because its very hard to get books on india art now a days. Its more of a leisure read. So think before why you want to buy this. Leisure or educational purpose, because if its the latter you will be highly disappointed. Other wise a good book for general read. My purpose wasn’t solved its the only reason i m goving this book low ratings.

Indian art
Il libro è ben fatto, naturalmente per chi ha già conoscenze dell'arte indiana e dell'inglese. Fondamentale la presenza delle foto e del linguaggio dettagliato e specifico per l'arte indiana, specie in sanscrito con diacritici.

Indian Art by Partha Mitter
My professor insists we read this book as a foundation for our Indian Vernacular course. She has read most text books on the subject and insists this is the only one that is accurate and gives and appropriate survey of Indian Art.

poor quality paper/images
I hadn't bought one of this Oxford series of art books for quite a few years. Very disappointed to see a big decline in paper quality and quality of the illustrations. One of the main reasons I buy art books is to enjoy high quality reproductions of wonderful art, even if rather small. I will never buy one of this series again.
