Dracula Untold is dark fantasy at it's throat-ripping best!
This movie is a grand example of how one should not trust the reviews and half-assed critiques one will find regarding movies that are all too often pushed aside for common sensationalist pap. Take a chance, and trust in your own instincts regarding films, and you will find that many will suit you just fine, and may in fact, prove to be far better than you ever would have thought. This, my friends, is one of the good ones. For the fans of the classic legends of vampires, this movie shows that it is possible to bring a new spin to a venerable creature of the night. Even the fans of the "fluffier" style of vampire might enjoy the romantic side of the titular character. But, unlike modern vamps, who are written to avoid the difficulties of daylight, or blood, or silver, Vlad Tepes/Dracul brings us back to those roots and demonstrates how an old school vampire manages 'like a "sir"'."Vlad Tepes (Luke Evans) is the Prince of Wallachia /Transylvania. Vlad and his men find a helmet that means an Ottoman scouting party is clearing the way for an invasion force. At Broken Tooth Mountain, Tepes finds a cave littered in bone fragments. Inside the dark depths they are savaged by a fiendishly strong man-like creature, whose speed, sharp teeth and keen red eyes, spell the death of all of Tepes' men, but not without cost. The wounded creature attempts to make Tepes his victim, but halts when sunlight causes his blood to burn and turn to ash on the wind. Vlad returns to his keep, and a monk informs him that a vampire, once a man who bargained with the devil for power, is accursed, and must remain in his rocky prison until he can pass his curse to another through a pact sealed with the vampire's own blood.Time passes, and Tepes is with his wife and son when a Turkish entourage arrive and see audience. Tepes offers them the customary tributes of silver coins, but the Sultan, named Mehmed, states that a contingent of Turkish men are missing, with the clear indication that Tepes was behind their disappearance. He then demands an additional tribute of 1,000 boys to be trained as soldiers. Tepes refuses the demand, but he knows his army is insufficient to repel the Turks if they should attack, so he asks Mehmed, who has known him since childhood, to show leniency and leave the children be. Mehmed is not swayed by his request and Tepes then offers himself in their stead. The Sultan then demands that Tepes' own son must come also. The boy tells his father that he is ready to join the Sultan's army, but Tepes kills the Sultan's men knowing that his actions will lead to war.Driven to desperation, Tepes revisits the cave seeking help from the vampire who tells him of the steep price of such a bargain. He holds forth a skull bowl containing a large amount of blackish vampire blood, and informs him that if he is able to resist human blood for three days, the deal will be nullified and he will retain his humanity. But, should he fail, he will inherit the blood curse of vampirism for all eternity and he will be required to render aid to the vampire when he finds his maker and seeks revenge upon him. Knowing that he has no choice if he is to save his people and his family, Tepes agrees and drinks the creature's blood completely. Immediately, he is wracked with pain, and through gritted teeth he asks:"What happens now?"The vampire turns away as he says:"Now, you die."Drawing from history surrounding the actual Prince of Wallachia, the movie incorporates a heroic view of the main character, just as residents of that area hold now. In this way, the story is a clever blend of romanticism, heroic sacrifice, infamous legend and historic events that is altogether entertaining and enjoyable. It's dark, and moody and the characters are well played. For those with teens and preteens, it's not all that bloody or gore-ridden, depending more on facial reactions and dizzying action to depict violence. There is one sexual situation that is quite tame, and the movie doesn't rely on foul language or crudity to carry the story. From beginning to end, it was a good vampire romp with great actors, great costumes, and dizzying quantities of bats. How cool is that!?If you are weary of vampires with the Star Trek: Next Gen. sinus-problem makeup to make them look "scary", or vampires that have had all the gritty, bitey fun stripped away, including the fangs, then join me in some classical throat-sucking warfare that you'll really enjoy. The end of the film implies a sequel, which I do hope eventually gets made, and I for one, want more! A lot more! I've honestly had all the wimpy sparkly vamps I can handle for one lifetime.

Excellent move, story line, casting
Now this is the side of dracula that makes you cheer for him. A great love story and if the story of the Turks is true than I can see it happening of why he was called Vlad the Impaler. But then none of us lived back then. Most drac movies want to scare the stew out of the audience. This one shows you strength, vulnerability, respect for God and I'd love to see a sequel. Excellent casting, excellent story line. I don't care for scary movies and this one was a man trying to save his family and people. Makes you think, did we over blow the history books about the real dracula?

Different from most Dracula movies
As a true admirer of the real Prince Vladislav III Dracula I was very hesitant about watching this movie since it had nothing to do with the real man and was really about the fictional character created by Bram Stoker. True some historical facts were thrown in even if they were inaccurate for the most part. I finally watched the movie and was greatly and pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. It does a descent job in fleshing out some of the backstory on Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula, but has him surviving into the current time whereas in the book he is destroyed by Johnathan Harker and Van Helsing. It is a good and entertains flick.

Settle in with your bowl of popcorn and hang on for a fun ride!
Great movie. So much to see I watched it twice in one day. I was not however looking for a historical adaptation. I was looking for a good movie that would hold my interest, and it did. The acting was very good and I really liked the story. Looked like they left it open for a second movie, which they have not produced.Hope the producers see how much everyone on Amazon liked it, because I would really like to see a continuation.Seems many thought it would be a historical version and were disappointed. Perhaps they should have given the movie a different title because I don't think the original reviews did this movie justice.

Not 'just another' Vampire Movie
I was quite surprised by this movie. The CGI is awe provoking and totally smooth, depending greatly upon PhysX coding to generate the most spectacular of these effects. The effects makes the extra expense of 4k UHD well worth it. I reviewed the cut-scenes and think that all but one cut actually made the movie better and more believable. The movie reviews the factual life of Vlad the Impaler and the desperation of odds that forced him to become one of the most infamous rulers in European history. It is these facts that led to the myth of Dracula the King of Vampires and this movie smoothly progresses from fact to myth, so smoothly in fact that one is hard pressed to separate the two, as it should be.Something told me to buy the 4k sight unseen and I am glad I listened to the voices in my head on this one. Since this has both 1080P and 4k versions in it, even if you do not have 4k yet, you probably will in a few years so might as get it now so you can amaze your senses when you upgrade.

Dracula <3
I actually didn't watch this film for so long bc of how low the ratings are, but always felt it might be good. I love the Dracula story (and am very upset they cancelled the Dracula series with Jonathon Rhys Meyers) and this wasn't a disappointment. There are plenty of films with a low rating which I actually really enjoyed and I am definitely a film buff.Luke Evans is so captivating... and very easy on the eyes. Grab a bowl of popcorn, light some candles and enjoy!I knew about the backstory of the historical figure Vlad the Impaler, so I was actually worried it would be more true to history and therefore boring for me -- but I was very happy to find a beautiful gothic tale, an interpretation of history and a new take on the story of Dracula. It wasn't cheesy at all, which can be when you have poor actors, and I felt the actors were wonderful, beautiful setting too.

Slow start, with some good ideas, but over all, dissapointing.
Ok film, with some good ideas. Slow start, but gets slightly better near the end. I am still looking for this Dracula story to be done justice. This is along the right lines, but still lacking.4K HDR picture is good, but there are some areas were the camera is not in focus and suffers from the intended rubbish background sky film grain. I really don't see the point in this, I want 4K HD razor sharp, not film grain.Over all, worth a watch.

'AN ENJOYABLE WATCH IF BUT A RE-INVENTION OF THE FABLED TALE'
The year is 1492 Transylvania - The small Kingdom ruled by 'Prince Vlad' (The Impaler)(Luke Evans) has enjoyed peace for thepast ten years. When during a Celebration the Kings envoy turn up to claim the fealty due, they also demand 1000 boys to serve with his armies'the selection would also include 'Prince Vlad' and 'Mirena's' (Sarah Gadon) young Son, however 'Vlad' is not prepared to meet thedemands of 'King Mehmed' (Dominic Cooper) knowing the warlord will wreak vengeance upon his small kingdom.Earlier 'Vlad' had lost two of his men in a mysterious cave on the side of a mountain that harbours pure evil, it is to this cave thePrince turns too, to save both his family and his people, the cost to himself, eternal damnation, he will become something verydifferent with unimaginable power and senses, which have been passed to him by 'The Master' (Charles Dance)The passion for his family and his people remains, he returns to his castle which is under siege from overwhelming forces - odds hewill not fear.'Vlad' seeks to take his family and people to a safe place knowing the War-Lord King will hunt them down, as the days pass his needfor blood becomes intense....The story to be told well needed more than the approx 90 minute run-time, the story perhaps a little fanciful stretching the story andlegend in the telling of the beginnings of Dracula, however if watched with little expectation, as a spectacle putting aside legend it'sa decent special-effects viewing. As an earlier reviewer pointed out the role taken by Charles Dance somewhat beneath his acting prowess in truth.Good Picture and Sound QualityFeatures -* Alternate Opening* Deleted Scenes* Feature Commentary* Day in the Life - Luke Evans* Dracula Retold* Staying 1000* The land of Dracula* Interactive Map* Luke Evans - Creating a Legend

ONE OF THE BEST VERSIONS I'VE SEEN.!
Great version of DRACULA but not quite as good as the 1992 GARY OLDMAN version. This version show DRACULA as a family man " VLAD the impaler " and is focusing on how he became a vampire. The story in a whole is really good with plenty of violence and fangs.DTS HIGH MASTER 5.1 / Plenty of bonus features = 1HR 30 MINUTES +

Outstanding retelling of Vlad Dracul's origin story
I personally love this retelling of the Dracula origin story. It's suitably full of both action and atmosphere. Incredibly annoyed that Universal are going to include it within their "Dark Universe" cannon.
