Great read.
This was a very good book about a war that it seems was not very popular, but was a great cause. Many men lost their lives for what they believed in, my Dad was one of those pilots, he never told us kids anything about what he did, perhaps he ultimately block everything from everyone, even my mom. This book gave a overall big picture of the war, and why certain targets were picked, but the lose of life was big, and those (like my Dad) that survived this was were few.

Not for the Serious History Buff
The book is shallow and uses photos that you could find in any other book. What did me in on Xmas morning was when I found a large photo on page 58, captioned incorrectly. It has longbeen stated and confirmed that Kurt Tank (designer of the Fw-190 and Ta-152) was flying an Fw-189. Instead the author states that it is a Ju-88 crew flying in a confined space towards England in 1940. When you get a blaring misrepresentation likethat it is hard to believe any of the other captions or facts in this book. Not for those who live/love aircraft and know their aircraft histories. I was very disappointed. I am returning it!

This is a great book
Wow! What a great book and fabulous value for money. A huge number of photographs, some in colour and many previously unpublished (as far as I could see). I have a (weird?) interest in the history of the bombing campaign in Europe during WWII and a very large number of books on the subject. This is an excellent addition. Thorough and well written, it has an strong emphasis on the American involvement. but also covers the British and the German bombing campaigns. Only problem is that it is too big and heavy to take to bed and read, but the photos much more than make up for that. If you are at all interested in the subject I thoroughly recommend this book.

One Of The Best
This is an outstanding book. The writing is excellent but the pictures are some of the best you will find anywhere. In fact I would say that there are many photographs you have never even seen before. While I think the photographs are the best part of the book the writing is not to be ignored. This book tells one of the best and saddest stories around. They air war usually is written in a very sanitised mannner. This is true of many WWII books on any of the forces in any country. In a way this is understandable because millions of men and women, in and out of the military, gave their lives for what may have been the last "noble" conflict. The problem with writing that way is that we don't get to see or understand what battle really is like, even if it is a vicarious understanding. Combat vets will say no one can understand without having been there but it is possible to tell the stories in a way that non-combatants can get a real sense of the brutality and horror along with the comradery, heroism and simple day-to-day struggle and fear. The author also provides a balanced discussion on the pros and cons of the strategic bombing campaign. This is a large format coffee table type book. Buy it! You'll not be sorry.
