Essentials of Industrial Hygiene

Not worth the money, poorly edited
This book has some good content but as a professional industrial hygienist I did notice several areas where the information was incorrect. There are also quite a few typos throughout. I really like the concept of review questions at the end of each chapter but the answers are not provided. When I emailed to ask for the answers from the publisher, they only supplied answers and did not show how to work out the math problems. Some of the math problems do not provide enough info to solve and several of them ask questions that aren't even addressed in the chapter. For $140, spend your money on a quality textbook. I wouldn't recommend this if you're actually going to work through the questions or use them as a teaching tool. Amazon was nice enough to allow me to return this book for a full refund even after I had worked through half of it and written on some of the pages. Pleased with Amazon's service, not with content of book.

I bought it due to it being mandatory for the course but I was surprisingly disappointed.

Full of errors, poorly written examples, incorrect formulas... Don't waste your time or money.
Holy smokes, I think the person that wrote this book spent a little too much time being exposed to the hazards it is intended to help us protect against. It is a required book for my intro to industrial hygiene class, and I've pointed out a couple times where the book has the wrong formula or the answer was miscalculated... and I'm not even an industrial hygienist...! I find myself referencing more to general web searches to answer the review questions as often, the answers can't be found in the text of the chapter, which leads me to wonder, what is the point of the questions, or more importantly, what is the point of what I just read? When presented with sample formulas, they provide no steps in their calculations, so one is left to often wonder how they got their solution, when you calculate it the same way and get a different answer... after several times of finding the book's math wrong, I trust my own answers more than those in the book, and that's the opposite of what I'd call learning. All I've learned from this book, is to distrust any text the writer, editor, and publisher decided to throw together. I believe the National Enquirer probably does a better job of fact-checking before going to print.

Full of errors
I got this book as a trial to consider assigning for my Industrial Hygiene class. I ended up sending the publisher many emails and an overall Excel spreadsheet with all the many, many, many corrections the book needs - examples will have answers from other chapters in the textbook, there are typos everywhere, variables are either defined wrong or not at all, and they even have incorrect equations (so much as even the ideal gas law equation). They should stop selling this book until they fix the issues. I feel the need to write a review here because it is clear whoever rated the book highly either has not read it or was involved in making the book and wants to encourage people to buy it. Go with the Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene book, you'll be glad you did. And especially do not assign it to your students unless you want to confuse them and make yourself look like an ignorant instructor.

Good overview of the basic concepts - appropriate for the undergraduate classroom
Unlike the previous reviewer (Sunnyseas), I find this text to be a useful basic textbook for industrial hygiene or occupational health, particularly at the undergraduate level. It may not go into great detail but it is written in a clear and concise fashion and is appropriate for a semester course length. Chapter topics are appropriate (IH concepts, OSHA and regulation, management systems, OELs, gases and vapors, aerosols, ventilation, respiratory protection, noise limits, radiation, thermal stress, ergonomics, biological hazards, The supplemental materials from the publisher include lecture slides and as Sunnyseas mentioned, question answers). The topics and information are well organized. I did not find any major calculation errors and conceptually the information is sound. Some of the sample problem answers are a bit short on detail, but a motivated student should be able to work it out. I am not aware of any other current text that covers the basics of industrial hygiene in a concise format (371 pp plus index). For a practicing industrial hygienist the coverage is too limited. But for a classroom setting, this seems a good text. For example, Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene, which is a great reference, is over 1000 pp of fine print and would likely be a tough slog for the average undergraduate. I do agree that the cost is higher than it should be, as is common for new textbooks.
