Lonely Planet Japan 16 (Travel Guide)

Very useful
I just returned from a six-week solo visit to Japan. My trip was planned almost entirely in reliance upon this great guide. I used this guide extensively to choose the cities and towns I would visit and the sites I would see there. This was the foundation of the trip and the book was solid in this regard. I credit the book with sending me to one great place after another. No regrets at all.I used the book to a lesser extent in making inn and hotel reservations. It was fine in that regard, although some of the smaller inns were closed or would not accept solo guests. Japanese hotels and Inns usually charge by the guest and small Inns lose money when a solo traveler takes up one of the rooms that can accommodate two or more, so I get it. So I sometimes ended up staying in random business hotels. When I did stay where the guide suggested, it was great. The directional guidance was good when I used it, and the maps are adequate, but Google maps is more useful on the ground. Google maps will give you train and bus information as well as roads.I cannot comment on the food guidance, as I just chose random restaurants. And I cannot comment on the night life advice as my body adopted an early to bed and early to rise rhythm and I didn't fight it.So, thank you Lonely Planet for playing a big part in an amazing trip to an amazing country. And most of all thank you to Japan and the Japanese people.

First Timers: Essential Resource
I would declare this book as an essential resource for first time travelers to Japan, self-guided tourists, or budget travelers. I was all three when I bought this book before departing for Japan, and it helped me find a lot of great, off the beaten path gems that I would have likely overlooked myself. I was never bored, thanks to this book, as if you are in a new area, this book is almost guaranteed to have a restaurant, accommodation, and/or activity recommendation for a variety of interests. If you travel like me, and just like to "wing it" as you go, BUY THIS BOOK! :)

Great book for travelers wanting to plan a trip to Japan!
This book was great! I read about each of our destinations ahead of time and mapped out our activities in each city. We took the book to Japan (while larger/heavy), it was worth it! My husband and I took notes and highlighted our adventures and routes. Not only was the book thorough, up-to-date, and detailed with directions/attractions/information, it also provided great history and background information about Japan! We were not disappointed by this lonely planted book

Very well received
I gave this as a gift to someone going to Japan for the first time. He has said it is a great resource, and has allowed him to find some things to do in the areas he is going. He has it all highlighted and bookmarked, and raves about the information.

Useful guidebook for sights and transportation tips
Very useful guidebook. Really like it for useful information on sights and transportation tips. Less useful for places to stay (use booking.com) and restaurants. Like the series and used Lonely Planet on my trip to China too.

I travelled a few times with Lonely Planet so I recommend. This guide is nearly 700 pages so I am sure my trip will be a success and I am grateful for it.

Great guidebook!
Very excited to be using this for my first trip to Japan. The book has a subway map in the back that is detachable and can be used separately. Flipping through, it has lots of tips and tricks on sights and transportation tips. Thank you Lonely Planet for this wonderful guide!
