Rhetorius the Egyptian Paperback – May 21, 2009

I thought that the translations were pretty good and easy to follow. Bear in mind, this is ancient event-oriented astrology. Buy the Arkana Dictionary of Astrology by Fred Gettings as a companion to this book. Some of the foot notes explain the less well known astrological terms. It is presumed that the original text was written sometime in the 7th century, but the author is not sure. All in all a treasure to have, especially if you are interested in classical astrology and/or the ancient history of astrology.

Rhetorius made a compendium of useful material from earlier writers. About half preserves the Treasury of Antiochus of Athens, which sets out the basic elements of astrology. The rest, from a variety of sources, deals with natal interpretation. Chapter 54 is particularly interesting: preliminary considerations before interpreting a horoscope. Rhetorius is one of the main sources for ancient astrology, after Valens and Dorotheus. The translation is excellent, without the confusing "translationese" one finds in the work of non-astrologers (Pingree) or eccentric amateurs (Schmidt).

アレキサンドリアのポールの英訳図書（レヴュアーレヴュー済み）同様､永らく私家版としてのみ親しまれていた、ジェイムズ・ホールデン英訳によるレトリウス（504年頃活躍）の占星術概論（2009年刊）。レトリウスの本書執筆の目的は、氏自身より以前に活躍した占星術家達の仕事を抜粋・整理し公にすることであり、すべからくホールデンは本書を「古典占星術の宝庫」と呼んでいます。フランツ･キュモンが指摘した､章立てされていない文章までもが付け加えられた全118章は短いものは僅か2行､最長のものはハウスについて述べられた第57章で57ページに亘ります。たとえば第11､14､32､41､46章などはポルフュリス（ポーフィリー）､第16､18章などはアレキサンドリアのポール､それぞれの文章とほぼ同内容､などの訳者による脚注に基づき､引用元文章と照らし合わせてみると興味深いものとレヴュアーは考えます。シドンのドロセウス､プトレマイオス､ヴェッティウス･ヴァレンズからの引用ももちろんあり､上記ハウスの章はフィルミクスからの引用が多いです。第2～11ハウスの説明では､七天体がそれぞれのハウスにある場合の説明を二巡に亘り説明していますが､これを訳者はレトリウスが別の引用元をも参照し出したからだろうと説明しています。
