Cecil B. DeMille: The Art of the Hollywood Epic

A very large (and heavy!) book, yet it is much more than just a coffee table book full of pictures. While the listings list Presley as the primary author, Mark Vieira appears to have written most of the text (which is actually quite substantial in this 400 page book) and like his previous books, the narrative in this book is informative and yet entertaining, with some marvelous anecdotes and stories. The photography is stunning with an excellent selection not only of stills from the movie sets (DeMille was a great believer in using still photography to document the movie making process) but also of personal and candid photos from DeMille's own collection and that of his granddaughter. The book focuses on his later films, but does not overlook his early career. Very highly recommended.

Wonderful book with beautiful illustrations. Having done my Master's Thesis in Creative Writing on Cecil B DeMille, I've read every book I could find on the fascinating life of this visionary filmmaker. I had the wonderful please of meeting Cecilia de Mille Presley at an event celebrating the unearthing of artifacts in Guadalupe Dunes from DeMillle's silent version of The Ten Commandments. Cecil B DEMille: The Art of Hollywood combines personal stories and never-before seen photographs and illustrations about the making of Hollywood as the motion picture capitol of the world. Told with intimate emotion and insightful grace, the story unfolds like one of DeMille's screen spectaculars. Look forward to seeing these stories played out on the big screen as C.B. Stunning is the word that keeps popping in my head as I page through this wonderful volume on one of the great directors of early Hollywood. With each page I encounter a photograph, sharp and colour-true, which reminds me of an actress, actor or scene from one of DeMille's outstanding classics. Enough so, that I want to sit and watch it right away. If there were nothing but the photographs with captions, such a book would be necessary for all interested in his works, this period of Hollywood history and of the great actresses, actors and sets DeMille molded for his films. The cover image deservedly wets one's appetite for the banquet of images between the covers which do not disappoint the buyer or reader.

Great condition and exquisitely packaged. A treasure of a book, this man has had the biggest influence on me as an oil painter and artist at the river arts district in Asheville NC. My main goal in this life is to bring back his spirit through the world of fine art. I’m probably going to be his disciple and turn the art world around thanks to this man.

Well I got this book in discount price. So i thought the book was "ok" for the price , meaning, that I knew it was gonna come with some blemishes. The fact is that the book was practically NEW, and very little damage ,almost non perceptible.The book is massive and the visuals of Mr De mille were astounding.To any one who loves historical epics this book is a must have, besides Sergei Eisenstein, De mille stand as one of those cinema giants that people in special americans has learn to love .

I was glad to get this book at an excellent price but amazed by how it was shipped. Using a bubble mailer from the '90s, this large, heavy coffee table book just barely made it to my door. One corner of the mailer was torn and one corner of the book was bent in. How this hefty book didn't burst through the flimsy mailer is beyond me. Maybe all the other mail acted as a cushion. Bottom line: please use better bubble mailers. Or a box?

This is one HUGE book and I mean it's big and heavy and full of pictures and info and.... it's great! Mr. DeMille would be proud of what his daughter Cecilia has done in putting all her dad's film experience in one collection. Even though the photos are in black and white they are beautiful (some people have a problem with that and only like color photos - not I!). This is truly epic and very readable. I'm so glad to have it.

This is a very special book. This elegant and impressive publication is a hybrid between an art book, a film history tome, a fashion/style bible and family memoir. What I thought I already knew was made more clear by the incredible details and memories from Cecil B. DeMille's granddaughter Cecilia (a film scholar in her own right) and the amazing detail of the "art" that made up DeMille films, organized by Mark Vieira. I loved the stories, the pictures and the journey deeper into the film industries legendary founding director Mr. DeMille. Read every word or just look at the pictures either way you will enjoy it.

Libro sontuoso (in inglese), interessante da leggere ma bello anche soltanto da sfogliare, con le sue splendide e numerosissime fotografie. Per quello che offre, e per come lo offre, il prezzo è estremamente conveniente.

Whether you are an admirer of DeMille or not, this book will impress any film fan. I am so pleased with this purchase, such a well written book, so informative, so readable and then there are the sumptuous photographs!This book is absolute quality, production, intelligent,factual writing, stunning selection of images, even the quality and weight of the paper is superb!All DeMilles' films are covered in chronological order, they are discussed with great insight and related to time they were made.A very successful book, which will appeal to all.
